Top 2018 recruit Xavier Thomas chooses Clemson over South Carolina

Defensive end Xavier Thomas, the No. 1 player on ESPN’s Junior 300 rankings, has committed to Clemson instead of South Carolina.

Defensive end Xavier Thomas, the No. 1 player on ESPN’s Junior 300 rankings and No. 2 in the 2018 class according to 247Sports, has committed to Clemson.

Thomas, who is from Florence, S.C., promised to attend college in his home state, and his choice was between Clemson and South Carolina.

He elected to play for Dabo Swinney and the 2016-17 champion Tigers, and he made his choice known via Twitter.


Thomas said he made his decision a few weeks ago but visited South Carolina last weekend to confirm he was doing the right thing. Contrary to rumors circulating around the Internet, nothing happened at the Gamecocks’ spring game that prompted him to change his mind.

“Clemson is just a special place. Every time I come here I feel like I am a part of the family,” Thomas told TigerNet. “I love the campus, and I have a great relationship with the coaches. But the main reason I chose Clemson is because I want to be a part of something special. You can win championships at Clemson, and I want to be a part of that.”

The 6-3, 265-pound defender,who recently ran a 4.58 40-yard dash, will play his senior season at IMG Academy in Florida.

Thomasjoins Swinney’s stellar 2018 class that according to TigerNet also includes 5-star quarterback Trevor Lawrence of Cartersville (Ga.), 4-star defensive end Justin Mascoll of Snellville (Ga.), 4-star wide receiver Derion Kendrick of Rock Hill (S.C.), 4-star linebacker Mike Jones Jr. of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG, 3-star linebacker Jake Venables of Central (S.C.) Daniel and 3-star defensive tackle Josh Belk of Richburg (S.C.) Lewisville.
