Toronto Wolfpack announce 2023 return
Toronto Wolfpack have announced that they will return to the field this year, as they look to grow their own competition in the shape of the Canada Cup.
The Canadian club have not played since their 42-6 win over Washington DC Cavalry in the Canada Cup in September 2021.
The inaugural Canada Cup match, with Washington DC replacing the Ottawa Aces (now Cornwall RLFC), was set up to provide a taster to fans ahead of the proposed North American Rugby League competition, which was set to commence in 2022.
However, talk surrounding the new NARL competition has fallen silent.
Toronto have now taken matters in to their own hands by growing their own competition, which will which see them play a minimum of 10 games this season at their Lamport Stadium home.
The Wolfpack say they will cost teams from the United States and Canada in what is being dubbed the ‘2023 Canada Cup’, which will expand to a 15-minimum home game season in 2024, with three additional away games in the USA.
Toronto also say they are working on hosting an international match this year.
Toronto Wolfpack issue statement to their supporters
The club have published an open letter to their fans about their 2023 comeback.
It read: “To our Wolfpack family,
“On behalf of the Toronto Wolfpack RLFC organisation, we would like to take this opportunity to officially announce that the Wolfpack will be back for the 2023 season!
“Despite our faith in the proposed NARL league competition and best efforts to make that a reality, we have decided to control our own destiny and grow our own competition.
“As a result, the team will be hosting the 2023 Toronto Wolfpack Canada Cup. We will be playing a minimum of 10 games this season at the “Den”, Lamport Stadium.
“The 2023 Canada Cup will have the Wolfpack hosting rugby league teams from the United States and from Canada. In addition, the team is hard at work negotiating one additional international match for the 2023 season. More details to come.
“The Canada Cup event will then expand to a 15-minimum home game season in 2024 with three additional away games played in the United States. In total, 18 games are planned for the 2024 season.
“Stay tuned for the complete, upcoming 2023 Toronto Wolfpack Canada Cup schedule and more news about the future of the team as we progress.
“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the loyal Wolfpack fans for your patience, for your support and for running with the pack!
“Sincerely, Team Wolfpack.”
