Torquay United want to keep loan midfielder Will Jenkins Davies

Torquay United manager Paul Wotton has held talks with Plymouth Argyle about the future of loan midfielder Will Jenkins Davies, who is due to return to Home Park on January 2.

The 20-year-old dynamo has been in fine form in the middle of the park for the Gulls in the last month, and scored three goals in two games before United’s FA Trophy match against Horsham at Plainmoor on Tuesday night.

Because of injuries, Jenkins Davies had a broken year at Plainmoor last season but joined the Gulls again before the start of this one – and has grown into his role in the team, leaving fans concerned that he will leave the club. Losing him would be a blow, but as Wotton pointed out last week: “Will is not our player.”

Speaking before Saturday’s game against Horsham was postponed until Tuesday, the Torquay manager said: “We are in constant conversations with Argyle regarding him anyway – as I am in constant communication with Gloucester and Bath regarding our boys who are out on loan.

“It’s very normal to speak to the clubs they are on loan to. All we can do is ask the question,” added Wotton, before confirming he had ‘asked the question’ – but there was no further update.

“At the end of the day he is not our player. He is contracted to Plymouth Argyle and they will do what they see right for Will’s development. There’s pros and cons with loans, isn’t there? So it’s out of my hands a little bit.”

If it wasn’t for the fact that Jenkins Davies is on loan from Argyle there might be a worry he would return to his parent club and then be loaned out to a team in the National League, or maybe even in League Two of the Football League, to see how he does at that next step up.

But with the relationship between Torquay and Argyle seemingly strong, following the successful loan of Adam Randell that saw that midfielder develop into a first team player and captain in the Championship, it’s possible the coaches at Home Park will be comfortable with WJD – as he is also known – being at Plainmoor and playing National South level football until the end of the season. But it would be a nice early Christmas present – wouldn’t it? – if news that he is staying came out before December 25.

“He’s just an infectious lad, he’s a great lad and hopefully we can keep him for longer than we have got him,” Wotton said after the 4-1 win against Enfield Town, in which the player scored two goals, following his first of the season in the 4-2 win against Weston-super-Mare.

Torquay have three other players on loan with Yeovil Town right back Jordan Thomas signed up for the season and Stoke City striker Keke Jeffers until January 2, as well as Finn Tonks on a season-long loan from Bournemouth The Gulls are back in league action on Saturday when Farnborough are at Plainmoor.
