Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa: Defeat dents Spurs’ European hopes in what could be Harry Kane’s final home match
Tottenham’s hopes of qualifying for Europe were dealt a severe blow as they lost to Aston Villa in what could be Harry Kane’s final match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A comical own goal from Sergio Reguilon and a goal from Ollie Watkins saw Villa come from behind to secure a win that means Spurs are now in real danger of missing out on European football next season.
Kane was given a rousing reception by the returning 10,000 supporters after it emerged this week that he has told Tottenham that he wants to leave the club this summer.
But Spurs were booed off by their own fans following another below-par performance on a damaging night in north London.
The result leaves Tottenham in sixth place but Everton have moved level on points with them after beating Wolves 1-0, while West Ham play West Brom later on Wednesday when they could capitalise on the Spurs slip-up.
Tottenham must finish in fifth or sixth spot to qualify for the Europa League group stages, while seventh place would be secure a Europa Conference League play-off spot.
And they now face a nervy final day on Sunday when they are away at Leicester.
All eyes were on Kane after he told Spurs he wanted to leave, sparking interest from Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.
Kane looked emotional as he waved to all four sides of the stadium at the end of the game.
The first chant from the supporters inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was: “Harry Kane, he’s one of our own.”
But if Spurs do miss out on Europe it will make it even harder for them to keep their prized asset.
Spurs actually started brightly and went ahead after eight minutes Steven Bergwijn pounced on a poor touch from Marvelous Nakamba, drove into the box and fired a powerful shot into the roof of the net.
But Villa equalised on 20 minutes thanks to a comical own goal from Reguilon and never looked back.
Under no pressure at all, Reguilon swiped at a harmless cross with his right foot and slashed the ball past Hugo Lloris and into his own next from about 16 yards.
It was a horrible moment for Reguilon and he was at fault again as Villa went ahead on 39 minutes.
Twice the left-back failed to clear, Bertrand Traore closed him down before the ball broke to Watkins inside the area and he took a touch before firing past Lloris.
Villa had chances to go further ahead at the end of a first half they dominated and Spurs were booed off by their own fans at half-time.
Spurs came out with more intent in the second half and did improve after the break but they could not find an equaliser.
