Tottenham agree deal to sign highly-rated goalkeeper viewed as long-term successor to Hugo Lloris
Tottenham have reportedly agreed on a deal to sign a highly-rated Turkish goalkeeper on a free transfer in the summer.
Spurs have numerous questions that need answering at the end of the current campaign, with the future of boss Antonio Conte chief among them. However, whoever is in charge is expected to be handed funds to strengthen a squad short on real top quality throughout.
A new keeper, at least one centre-back and a midfielder are expected to the main positions of need for the north London club. But it looks like finding a successor to veteran stopper is high on their agenda.
Conte is said to have lost patience with No.1 Lloris, who is currently on the sidelines, after a string of errors this season.
The Frenchman enjoyed an outstanding World Cup in Qatar but struggled upon his return before suffering a knee injury in the win over Manchester City.
A number of names have been mooted as his long-term replacement. That list includes the likes of Leeds stopper Illan Meslier and, more latterly, Sevilla star Yassine Bounou.
However, according to Fotospor, Spurs have agreed to sign 24-year-old Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce on a free transfer.
The Turkey international, who has won five caps for his country, will be out of contract in the summer.
Lengthy Lloris stay drawing to a close
The report adds that Bayindir’s arrival could signal the end of Lloris’ decade-long stay in north London.
Bayindir is considered one of the top talents coming out of Turkey, where he’s a regular for Fenerbahce.
He is also moving towards becoming the No.1 for his country and is not being thought of as a backup at this stage.
However, there is a school of thought that Lloris could stay on for one more year, with Bayindir learning under the World Cup winner before eventually replacing him.
Meanwhile, Fraser Forster is the man between the sticks for Spurs while they await Lloris’ availability again.
Despite conceding four in his first outing since replacing Lloris at Leicester, Forster has performed well in the games since against AC Milan and West Ham.
He is once again expected to start when Chelsea head to north London in the Premier League on Sunday.
Victory for Tottenham over their bitter London rivals will see them move 14 points clear of Graham Potter’s men.
