Departing Tottenham Hotspur attacker Lucas Moura has explained why he thinks the Premier League outfit “went backwards” during the 2022/23 campaign.
It has already been confirmed that the former PSG star will be leaving Spurs when his contract expires at the end of this month.
The 30-year-old dropped down the pecking order in 2022/23 as he only played 23 times across all competitions. He scored on the final day against Leeds but he was unable to make a single start for the London outfit in the Premier League during his final season at the club.
Moura was left on the periphery as Tottenham endured a nightmare campaign in 22/23. Expectations were high at Spurs after Antonio Conte guided them to a fourth-place finish last season but things quickly unravelled.
Conte often butted heads with Tottenham’s hierarchy over transfers during his time in charge and he left in March after hitting out at his “selfish” players.
Ryan Mason ended the 22/23 season as the club’s interim manager and under him, they ended up finishing eighth in the Premier League. They were only able to win two of their last eight games in the league.
It is understood that Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is set to join Spurs and he has a major job on his hands heading into the summer.
Ahead of his exit, Moura has indicated that Tottenham’s “main problem was consistency” this season.
“It was a very difficult season for the team, it ended up being frustrating. The expectation was very high, we had a qualified team to do better. The main problem was consistency. There was a lack of consistency in the team and that cost us a lot,” Moura told AS (via Sport Witness).
“The season started well but we quickly lost points and it ended up being expensive. There is no explanation for this inconsistency but perhaps a different strategy was missing, variations in the team.
“It lacked that consistency that’s necessary. We ended up frustrated by the expectations we had. It’s also a very competitive league, at a very high level. You cannot hesitate or you end up going backwards.”
Moura has also indicated that he has “some offers from various clubs” but he is yet to make a decision regarding his next move.
“My thought now is to take advantage of the holidays, enjoy my country, my family and friends, rest, take advantage of this time and then prepare for the next season. There is nothing defined,” Moura explained.
“I have some offers from various clubs and I am going to wait, calmly analyse what appears and then make the decision with my family.”
