Tottenham go back to the future with raid for £44m Juventus centre-back who provides immediate upgrade
Tottenham are reportedly ready to reignite their interest in signing an old centre-back target when the summer transfer window opens.
The addition of at least one new central defender is expected to be on the agenda for whoever takes over as the new permanent manager in north London, especially given Spurs’ recent defensive woes.
Tottenham have conceded 14 goals in their last four Premier League outings and have proved to be particularly at the very start and end of games.
To that end, Daniel Levy is expected to dish out funds to upgrade the position, which could be worrying news for the likes of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez, with the latter looking extremely likely to be sold.
But in terms of who could come in, it appears that Spurs are once again tracking Brazilian stopper Gleison Bremer.
The 26-year-old is known to have caught the attention of Newcastle in recent weeks, although Tottenham have been watching the player for at least a couple of seasons.
Bremer joined Juve at the beginning of the season and has quickly established himself as a key player for the Italian giants. Indeed, his four goals and an assist across all competitions this season have only added to his value for the Turin giants.
The former Torino man is comfortable playing in a back four or a three-man defence and, given his pace and power, could be an ideal partner for Cristian Romero.
Juve to demand £44m for key centre-back
However, Bremer will not come cheap, with Juventus likely to demand around €50million (£44m) for the Brazilian, as reported by CalcioMercatoWeb.
The report adds that Bremer may be tempted by the opportunity of playing in England, which has only piqued Tottenham’s interest.
However, the north London club need to resolve their manager issue first before they can start to turn towards major transfer targets.
Spurs are said to have scheduled a meeting with Sporting boss Ruben Amorim to discuss the role after he impressed in two Champions League outings against the club this season.
Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso, who has been working wonders at Bayer Leverkusen, is said to have overtaken Feyenoord’s Arne Slot in the pecking order to get the job.
Tottenham, with Ryan Mason still in interim charge, are back in action on Saturday when they host Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
