Tottenham have decided to take up a one-year extension option on Ben Davies' contract, keeping him at the club for the 2025/26 season, football.london understands.

The Welsh defender has been a bit-part player for much of Ange Postecoglou's reign at the club so far, but amid injuries to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero suffered in recent weeks he has stepped into the starting lineup to prove his worth to the team.

Davies started the 4-0 demolition of Manchester City at the weekend alongside Radu Dragusin, marshalling the line well as his side managed to keep a clean sheet for the first time in five games in all competitions.

The defender has even picked up his own nickname among fans, 'the Welsh Maldini', which teammate James Maddison was only too keen to bring up after the win against Pep Guardiola's team.

Davies' contract was set to expire at the end of the season, but the decision to extend his deal means the club will keep some stability in defence, with Van de Ven and Romero the current first-choice duo and Dragusin knocking on the door for competition.

Davies has filled in both at centre-back and left-back during Postecoglou's time in charge, but has seen more of his game time this year in the centre of defence, with Archie Gray's tactical flexibility meaning he can also fill in for Destiny Udogie on the left side of defence.

The 31-year-old securing a further season in north London will take his total stay with Spurs up to 12 years, assuming he stays for the entirety of his deal. It will of course mean that if Davies does wish to leave in the summer, Spurs will also be due a transfer fee rather than the defender being allowed to leave on a free transfer.
