Antonio Conte admits he does not know whether Tottenham will make any new signings before the transfer window closes but insists reinforcements are a must - even if deals for the club’s top targets prove too complicated this month.
A right wing-back, midfielder and forward are all on Conte’s wishlist but when asked whether he was sure at least one player would arrive, Conte said: “I don’t know.
“I know that the transfer window in January is always very difficult and it is more simple when you start the season to buy important players.
“In January it is not easy, but at the same time we know very well that if there is the opportunity and also if it’s not the best opportunity, but we need to do something.
“Also, if I repeat that this could not be the best opportunity but I think that we are in a situation where we have to try to implement the squad because the squad is not so big.”
Tottenham face a trip to Leicester tomorrow night and another meeting with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, having been outclassed by the Blues in this month’s Carabao Cup semi-final.
Both matches are crucial to Spurs’ top-four hopes as Conte looks to maintain his unbeaten start in the league and, coupled with the business end of the transfer window, the head coach acknowledges the next fortnight will be vital in the context of their season.
“I think that we have to try and continue to have good results in the league,” he said. “It’s very important. We know very well that only after the international break the injured players are ready to come back in our squad. And it will be very important to overcome this period because it’s not easy to play many games - especially if you have many injuries in your squad.
“Then we’ll see what will happen during this period with the transfer market. In January it’s always an important period because if you can help the team, the squad, then you have the opportunity in this month to try and take the best opportunity.”
