Tottenham are closing in on a deal for Sporting Lisbon full-back Pedro Porro after completing the deal that saw Arnaut Danjuma dramatically turn down Everton at the very last minute.

Danjuma, 25, has joined Spurs on loan from Villarreal until the end of the season, having already completed the formalities of a deal to Everton before changing his mind. His Spanish club have confirmed there is an option to buy the Dutch winger at the end of the campaign.

Spurs have turned their focus to the protracted deal for Porro and have held more talks with Sporting over the Spanish full-back. According to sources in Portugal, a €45 million (£39.6m) buyout clause in Porro’s contract may no longer be in place, which would allow the clubs to negotiate a price away from his release fee.

There is some optimism at the Portuguese club over a deal being completed in the final days of the window, despite no agreement being made yet. The 23-year-old will give a huge profit to Sporting after they signed him on a permanent deal for £7m from Manchester City.

He will be expected to play right wing-back in Antonio Conte’s system, where Emerson Royal played in the victory over Fulham on Monday and the position Matt Doherty competes for. Djed Spence will be allowed out, with his arrival in the summer preventing him from a loan to another Premier League club in the same window under competition rules.

Danjuma freshens up Conte’s attack for the second half of the season, having completed his medical on Monday after abandoning his move to Everton. He was at Bournemouth between 2019 and 2021 before playing for Villarreal in the Champions League but he has been allowed out this window, travelling over to England at the weekend in an attempt to seal a move.
