Tottenham are ‘leading the race’ to sign a troubled Newcastle star who could net Eddie Howe’s side around three times the figure they paid to sign him, per a report.

The Magpies look odds-on to take the next step in their revolution by qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Among the teams their surge into the top is is likely to come at the expense of is Tottenham.

Spurs currently trail Newcastle by a hefty eight points and have also played a game more. Man Utd are sandwiched between the pair in fourth spot, though the Red Devils have games in hand on both sides.

There’ll be plenty of soul searching over the coming weeks and months at Tottenham, with a new permanent manager and resolving the future of Harry Kane among Daniel Levy’s top priorities.

However, according to the Mirror, Spurs are also making moves in the transfer market, with Newcastle’s Allan Saint-Maximin firmly in their sights.

The maverick Frenchman, 26, has fallen out of favour at St. James’ Park this term. Saint-Maximin has been restricted to just 11 league starts and talkSPORT recently claimed Newcastle are ‘ready to cash in’.

Explaining why, the outlet reported Saint-Maximin has begun to question his role following the big-money arrival of Anthony Gordon.

Gordon was a £45m (including add-ons) signing from Everton in January. The 22-year-old has barely got a look-in thus far, though £45m signings aren’t made to sit on the bench. Gordon’s role is likely to increase next term and Saint-Maximim is feeling the heat.

TEAMtalk previously learned the lively winger’s calls for a new and improved deal from Newcastle have fallen on deaf ears. Combined with the Gordon arrival, an exit is quickly coming into focus.

The Mirror now state Saint-Maximin might not have to leave the Premier League when searching for his next club. Tottenham are said to be heading the queue for a player they made ‘discreet enquiries’ into signing in January.

AC Milan too are fond of the Frenchman. However, a reported £50m price tag is likely to see Milan’s hopes crash and burn.

A £50m transfer would be around three times the initial £16.5m Newcastle paid when signing Saint-Maximin from Nice in 2019.

Tottenham are deemed to have held a long-term interest in the player and this summer may finally give them the chance to act on their interest.
