Bryan Gil is being targeted by Ligue 1 outfit Marseille as his Tottenham Hotspur future comes into focus again, according to reports in France.

Tottenham signed Gil last summer from Sevilla, after he had been on loan at Eibar. However, he only made nine Premier League appearances for Spurs – all from the bench – before heading out on loan to Valencia in January.

His spell back in Spain was more successful in terms of gametime. He didn’t score within 13 La Liga outings, but made an impression at Valencia.

There have been rumours about them trying to keep him. Alternatively, other Spanish suitors could be in contention for the 21-year-old.

But according to L’Equipe du Soir, and backed up by other sources, Marseille are interested in taking him to France instead.

Their president Pablo Longoria is an admirer of his compatriot Gil. Therefore, he has contacted Tottenham to learn about his availability.

Marseille would prefer to take Gil on a loan deal rather than a permanent transfer. Recent reports suggested Antonio Conte is willing to sell the winger, but with a contract until 2026, there is no pressure for Tottenham to force him out for good yet.

Hence, Marseille may give them something to consider.

Tottenham fielded interest from another Ligue 1 outfit for Gil in January, when Nice considered him. At the time, Spurs preferred to lend the youngster back to somewhere in his homeland.

Bryan Gil could benefit from new challenge

But perhaps the next stage of his development could be to test himself in a different environment.

If he can work out how to adapt to Ligue 1, then perhaps he could equip himself to make a better impression somewhere like the Premier League. Alternatively, he may impress enough for a permanent move to follow.

Any windfall Tottenham would receive further down the line would be useful. After reportedly investing more than £20m in his signing, which was a part-exchange deal involving Erik Lamela, Spurs will be hoping he can retain some value.

Whether he will ever be of use to them is another matter. But there are clearly several clubs who believe in the 21-year-old’s potential.
