Dean Saunders is of the belief that Tottenham Hotspur are only a “couple of signings away” from challenging Man City and Liverpool for the title.

Tottenham have fared well since Antonio Conte took over towards the end of 2021.

The ex-Chelsea and Inter Milan manager helped guide Spurs to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League last term.

Conte clearly wants Tottenham to kick on next season. They have already signed Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic and Yves Bissouma ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. They are also linked with Richarlison and Djed Spence.

Spurs finished 22 points behind Man City last term. Despite this, Saunders does not think they are far away from having a “right go” at the title:

“He’s gone in there, got the running stats up, and they’ve got ready-made pros there who have now got the bit between their teeth,” Saunders told talkSPORT.

“He’s made two good signings from the club he was at in the past and they’ve both played well.

“They’ve got [Heung-Min] Son, [Harry] Kane, [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg, [Cristian] Romero, and if they sign another world class centre-back, [Djed] Spence is a better prospect than Emerson.

“The manager is relentless. He doesn’t just want to win something now, he’s not interested in four years he’ll have a good team, he wants to win something now or he’s off.

“He will be saying: ‘Let me know, Daniel Levy, if you don’t give me the funds to buy the ready mades’. Perisic is ready made. He’s going to improve them right now.

“I think they are a couple of signings away from having a right go at Man City and Liverpool.”

Meanwhile, The Athletic have revealed that there was some interest from Man Utd in Bissouma before Tottenham signed him on Friday.

Man Utd have made Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong their top midfield target this summer but they are struggling to agree a fee with the Catalan giants.

The Athletic added: ‘United this week made a check call to Brighton on Yves Bissouma before his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur emerged. But Bissouma was not regarded as a serious candidate to pursue at this stage. De Jong is the box-to-box midfielder Ten Hag wants.’
