Antonio Conte says getting his best players back fit and available is desperately needed to bring “life” to Tottenham’s season as he confirmed Eric Dier will miss Sunday’s north London derby against Arsenal.

Spurs are also checking on one possible Covid situation ahead of the fixture, which is already in some doubt because of an injury, suspension and Covid crisis at the Gunners.

Tottenham were already certain to be without forward Heung-min Son and centre-back Cristian Romero because of long-term injuries and Conte confirmed Dier’s absence to add to his problems as he prepares for his first derby as Spurs boss.

“About Eric Dier, he’s suffering a little problem,” the Italian said. “A little muscular problem. He’s not fit for the game against Arsenal. It’s a pity, I repeat.

“Now it’s important for us to play these three games before the international break and then to recover important players. For us, much more than other teams it’s very, very important to recover all the important players. Yeah, it’s life for us to recover these players.”

Arsenal were today checking on the fitness of the likes of Bukayo Saka and Cedric Soares, who were forced off during last night’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

Injuries, Covid and AFCON absences had already left the Gunners short on numbers ahead of that game and the new knocks, as well as Granit Xhaka’s suspension have raised doubts as to whether Mikel Arteta’s side will even be able to meet the Premier League requirement of having 13 available senior outfield players.

Of Tottenham’s current situation, Conte added: “As you know very well, we have many, many injuries. And then there is always the Covid situation everyday, that you have to check. Sometimes you find a surprise. But we are preparing the game against Arsenal.

“I think in this moment, all the teams are suffering injury problems, covid situation, and international competition. And Tottenham the same. You know very well, you have seen the bench, our bench during the game against Chelsea. I can understand that we are in a moment where we have to try to recover very soon the players that are injured.”
