Tottenham extend defender's contract for another season despite expected transfer exit

Tottenham Hotspur have taken up the option to extend the contract of Joe Rodon despite his future expected to lie elsewhere, football.london understands.

This week the club announced that Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga had both been released from their contracts after the options to extend their deals by another 12 months were allowed to lapse by the club and the two defenders will now be looking for new clubs.

However, in the case of another Spurs centre-back in Rodon, it was decided to exercise the option within his contract to extend his deal to the full five years possible with the player understood to have been informed last month. The Welshman enjoyed a fruitful season away from the club this term and there is expected to be plenty of interest in his services this summer.

With the extra 12 months that will ensure Tottenham get a fee for the player if he departs as expected, as he is not part of Ange Postecoglou's plans for next season. The Australian admitted towards the end of the season that he was looking to sign another centre-back to compete with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin.

When Rodon was signed in the summer of 2020 he was announced by the club as having penned a contract until 2025, but football.london understands that, as with Sessegnon and Tanganga, it was a contract that ended this summer with an option to extend it by the extra year.

Rodon was a mainstay of the Leeds defence this season as they reached 90 points in third place and the Championship play-off final, where they lost to Southampton at Wembley. The 26-year-old Wales international played 50 times for Daniel Farke's side and was considered to be one of the highest performing centre-backs in the division last season and certainly a stand-out at Leeds.

Leeds did not have an option to sign the former Swansea man permanently and Farke admitted during the campaign that the club were set to try to agree some kind of deal with Tottenham, where Rodon has only made 24 appearances since signing almost four years ago.

With the Elland Road club remaining in the Championship for another year, it remains unclear whether Leeds will still have the funds to sign Rodon at this point, although the player is understood to have enjoyed his season in Yorkshire. There are expected to be plenty of interested clubs this summer in a player who helped them keep a string of clean sheets with 11 alone over the first three months of 2024.

Rodon recently withdrew from the Wales squad for their friendlies against Gibraltar and Slovakia due to the accumulated physical knocks from his long season with Leeds and his country, playing almost 60 matches across the campaign.

After extending Rodon's contract, Spurs will be looking to cash in on his good season and put the money towards their search for new recruits for Postecoglou's side.
