Tottenham in fantastic position to achieve Dortmund raid as move would ‘definitely appeal’ to high-quality ace
Tottenham are the best-placed club to sign Julian Brandt from Borussia Dortmund as he is excited by the thought of joining them, according to a report.
Brandt has established himself as a top operator in the German Bundesliga both with Bayer Leverkusen and Dortmund. He managed 42 goals and 51 assists during 215 appearances for Leverkusen before moving to Dortmund in July 2019.
The attacking midfielder has proven to be a great capture for Dortmund. He contributed to over 20 goals during his debut campaign at the Westfalenstadion. After a disappointing season in 2020-21, he got back in the mix as one of Dortmund’s best players last term.
There is uncertainty over whether Brandt will end up staying at BVB beyond his current contract, which expires in June 2024. The German outfit are trying to extend his terms, although there is also the possibility of him securing a transfer to a different league.
According to German outlet Bild, this is where Tottenham come in. They have come up with a plan to ‘lure’ Brandt away from Germany and to the Premier League.
It is likely Spurs will send Dortmund an offer for the 26-year-old in the summer transfer window. And they should not have to pay full price for him due to his contract running down.
Spurs have a great chance at landing Brandt, too. Bild claim he has told those close to him that a move to England would ‘definitely appeal’ to him.
One of the reasons Brandt would like to join Spurs is that it would give him the opportunity to live in the same city as Chelsea attacker Kai Havertz. They are close friends after playing at Leverkusen and representing the German national team together.
Chelsea man could help Tottenham sign Bundesliga star
Brandt and Havertz would be rivals on the pitch, of course. But both being in and around London would allow them to see each other more often.
Dortmund finding out about Spurs’ interest in their star will definitely result in them speeding up the contract renewal process. Ultimately, though, the decision rests with Brandt. He could reject Dortmund’s offer of a new deal in order to push through a move to the Prem, which would be a significant new challenge for him.
Brandt would be a great signing for Spurs as he is a creative player with plenty of international and Champions League experience. The only trouble for Antonio Conte, should he remain manager past this summer, is where to fit Brandt into the starting eleven.
Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski are pretty much nailed on starters in the positions either side of Harry Kane. So Brandt may find it tough to displace one of these players and get into the first team on a regular basis.
But perhaps Brandt backs himself to make a big impact and force his way into Conte’s plans.
There is also the alternative of Conte leaving at the end of his contract, which expires in June. Mauricio Pochettino could arrive as his replacement. And he would love to use a central attacking midfielder like Brandt, just as he had Christian Eriksen during his first spell with Spurs.
Pochettino becoming manager might give Brandt a much better chance at shining for Spurs. He could play down the middle of an attacking trio which also involves Son and Kulusevski, with Kane just in front.
