Tottenham given free shot at £60million Premier League target as Chelsea throw towel in after lengthy saga
Tottenham are reportedly readying a bid for Everton star Anthony Gordon, with Chelsea having shelved their pursuit after a long summer saga.
Gordon was the name on a lot of lips around the Premier League in the summer. Indeed, the winger became the subject of heavy transfer interest from a number of places.
That was after a breakout season in the top flight, in which he scored four goals and chipped in with two assists.
Tottenham, Newcastle United and Chelsea were some of the most frequently linked sides. While the Tottenham and Newcastle links went nowhere, Chelsea were more than keen.
Everton stood firm after the Blues offered £40million and then sent a revised, higher offer for the winger. It was clear that Frank Lampard did not want to lose one of his most promising talents.
While reports of Everton demands came to light – a fee in the region of £60million – Chelsea did not succumb to those, and Gordon remained a Toffees player.
It was obvious throughout that saga that Everton were desperate for that to be the case.
Since, there have been talks of a new contract renewal, highlighting the club’s desire to keep Gordon around. Though talks have reportedly stalled, and interest could return.
Anthony Gordon transfer left to one club
After a long pursuit, Chelsea had to draw the line somewhere. Of course, nothing came of their persistence in their quest to snare Gordon in the summer.
They might have reinvigorated that interest in the upcoming transfer window. However, as per The Sun, they are not bothered about reviving their interest, with a different manager at the helm.
There is now a sense that could leave Spurs with ‘a free run’.
The report states that Antonio Conte’s side are ‘weighing up’ a move for Gordon. That would not be a surprise, given they were apparently keen previously.
What’s more, with reports of contract talks breaking down, the feeling at Everton is that the summer interest could have proved a distraction for the winger.
Spurs ready to pounce for suitable star
It is also reported that enquiries have already been made regarding a January move for Gordon.
The forward would slot nicely into a lot of teams in the league. He is without question a quality attacker, evidenced by his three goals so far this season.
For Spurs, the snare of Gordon would be ideal for a number of reasons.
Conte’s side have been plagued with injury concerns at the top end of the pitch this season. Dejan Kulusevski, Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Richarlison have all suffered injuries this term.
As such, supplementing the wide areas with another talent that could ease the burden would be a solid plan. The attacking threat of the side would be fearsome when each star was fit.
Gordon certainly seems to be a good addition to the Tottenham side, if they can get it done.
