Brandon Austin has signed a new five-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 25-year-old has stepped up to the plate in recent months, filling in for the injured Fraser Forster and providing backup for Guglielmo Vicario at Spurs. Austin has been named on the bench by Ange Postecoglou for 12 Premier League games this season, following a previous campaign where he was benched 21 times due to Hugo Lloris' injury woes.

Spurs also face a homegrown player issue as they currently only have three senior first-team players who qualify - Austin, Alfie Whiteman and Oliver Skipp. Austin, a product of the club's academy, would help boost these numbers.

The club needs four club-trained senior players to register for European competition, and with Skipp rumoured to be leaving this summer for more regular play, Austin's extension could prove crucial.

The futures of on-loan players Japhet Tanganga and Troy Parrott at Tottenham remain uncertain. The only other option for Spurs to fill those spots in the European squad list would be to promote an U21 academy player, but they are already eligible on the B list, which would mean one less senior player in the squad.

Austin has been a consistent presence in the first-team squad under recent Tottenham managers and made his bench debut in a competitive match during the 1-1 home draw with Watford in the Premier League in October 2019.

He has had two loan spells, first joining Danish side Viborg FF on loan for half a season in 2020, where he made 14 senior appearances. The following year, he moved to the USA to join Orlando City on loan, making five appearances.
