Tottenham have reportedly joined the growing chase to sign a LaLiga forward who feels he has unfinished business in the Premier League.
Antonio Conte is actively looking to bolster his squad this month as the battle for the top four intensifies, although the forward area is expected to be lower on his list of priorities.
Spurs are expected to sign a centre-back, a right wing-back and a midfield playmaker, especially after Conte admitted his side lacks creativity.
However, the Daily Mail reports on Friday that the north London have joined the race to sign Villarreal wideman Arnaut Danjuma.
The 25-year-old moved to Spain in the summer of 2021 in a £22million deal after impressing at Bournemouth. However, the reports claims that the LaLiga outfit are prepared to loan Danjuma out.
Tottenham face strong competition to get a deal done though. Indeed, Everton and Aston Villa are also in the running, while his old club Bournemouth also want a return.
Links to Villa certainly makes sense, given that Danjuma’s old Villarreal boss Unai Emery is now in charge. Emery also admitted that he wants to sign another wide player in a recent interview.
Danjuma’s career has gone to another level in Spain, and speaking back in April 2022 he hinted that he still has plenty to prove if a return to England does happen.
He told The Guardian: “If we look at what I’ve done (in the 2021/22) season it’s quite fair and factual to say I’m among the best wingers in the world.
“To be the best you need to aim for more, and there’s so much I still want to achieve. I work with the striker coach on a daily basis. He sends me clips of every training session. I look into my movement, the way I run, how I pop the ball off.
“I look into my shape, where I stand in the formation. After the game we go through it and see there’s a lot of stuff I can do better.”
Danjuma keen on Premier League return
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano admits that Danjuma is very open to the idea of a Premier League this month. However, it appears strange that a player who was so effective for Villarreal last season would be allowed a loan exit this term.
Indeed, Danjuma had a very active role in the Spanish outfit reaching the Champions League semi-finals. That season he finished with 16 goals and four assists in 34 total games.
But things have been different this time around, with the winger notching six times in 17 outings with zero assists.
That would certainly explain Villarreal’s willingness to part company with Danjuma. Although quite where the player would fit in at Spurs is another issue.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are nailed-on starters, with Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison fighting over the right-wing spot. That would leave Danjuma hoping for cameo roles off the bench.
To that end, there’s a strong chance he’ll join a club where he has a much better chance of playing.
Tottenham are back in action on Sunday when they host table-topping Arsenal in the north London derby.
