Tottenham Hotspur might have to forget their interest in one of the candidates to become their next manager after Antonio Conte, according to a report.

It is looking increasingly likely that Conte will be leaving Tottenham at the end of the season. The Italian tactician seems unhappy with Spurs, who mutually might feel underwhelmed after their elimination from all cup competitions this season.

A recent report claimed that Conte may have regretted joining Tottenham right from the off. Since his appointment in November 2021, murmurs of discontent about the club’s spending have grown.

Now, it seems in everyone’s best interest for Conte and Tottenham to go their separate ways. But his departure at the end of his contract in the summer would send the club back to square one.

TEAMtalk was recently told that Daniel Levy will inevitably be thinking about finding a successor to Conte already. Indeed, there have been links with various candidates who could replace the Italian.

For instance, there have been suggestions of a return for Mauricio Pochettino. Alternatively, Tottenham could pursue an existing Premier League manager, like Brentford’s Thomas Frank or Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi.

Another option to have recently come into the equation is Fulham’s Marco Silva. After leading the Cottagers to promotion from the Championship, Silva has done well to consolidate their status in the top flight this season.

In fact, Fulham could be on course for a top-half finish, which would be a big achievement. Consequently, opinions about former Hull City, Watford and Everton boss Silva are becoming more positive.

For now, Silva is someone in the backs of Tottenham’s minds. But if they struggle to attract their preferred candidates, as happened in the summer of 2021 before Nuno Espirito Santo’s ill-fated spell as Conte’s predecessor, their attention may turn more seriously to Silva.

Fulham prepare new contract for Marco Silva

However, an update from Football Insider has revealed how Fulham want to put a stop to any plans of the sort.

Since they have the Portuguese tactician under contract until the end of next season only, the west London club are willing to speed up talks about extending his deal.

There have already been some discussions between Fulham and Silva about continuing together. In the coming weeks, they could become more serious.

If Silva chooses to commit to Fulham, Tottenham would have to be realistic and take him off their radar. Their interest in the 45-year-old may well be short lived.

And in fairness, it would be sensible for Silva to continue at Fulham. He hasn’t lasted particularly long in any of his previous roles in English football. Hence, the stability he is building at Craven Cottage is something worth preserving.

Still young for a coach, Silva has plenty of time ahead to step up to the level of a team like Tottenham. For now, it will do him no harm to keep trying to get Fulham to punch above their weight.

In other news, Tottenham appear to have chosen their preferred target for a problem position on the pitch.
