Tottenham Hotspur will be without two of their key defenders for the remainder of 2024 after an update from Ange Postecoglou.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are sidelined with injuries and will not be available to face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Thursday night.

Romero suffered an injury during the early stages of Tottenham's defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League on December 18. Van de Ven had previously missed five top-flight fixtures with a hamstring injury before making his return against the Blues, only to miss the trip to Southampton at the weekend.

Postecoglou was asked about Romero and Van de Ven's fitness when speaking in his pre-match press conference this week. The Spurs manager confirmed that the duo are not expected to return before the end of the month.

"I think both will be in the new year," Postecoglou told reporters on Thursday when asked about Van de Ven and Romero's injuries.

"Not as a significant injury as last time with Micky but obviously having a setback the medical team is going to make sure he is right to go. So both of them in the new year at some point."

With Romero and Van de Ven sidelined until January, the duo are expected to miss several important matches for Tottenham, starting with Thursday's clash against Man United in the Carabao Cup. The centre-backs will also be unavailable for Sunday's Premier League fixture against Liverpool in North London.

After that, Spurs still have two more Premier League matches against Nottingham Forest and Wolves before the end of 2024. Based on the update from Postecoglou, both Romero and Van de Ven will not be available for either of the top-flight matches.

Tottenham's first game of 2025 will see them host Newcastle United on January 4 in the Premier League. It remains to be seen if either Romero or Van de Ven will return for the clash against the Magpies, with further updates expected over the next couple of weeks.
