Tottenham have reportedly offered Harry Kane a new contract amid interest from a European powerhouse.
Manchester City set their sights on the England captain last summer to solve their striker problems. But Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had no plans to sell his star player and put City off with a huge price tag.
Kane had a slow start to the 2021-22 campaign, likely due to the summer transfer saga. But he went on to register 27 goals and 10 assists in 50 appearances.
His form, alongside that of Son Heung-min, helped Tottenham finish fourth in the Premier League and therefore qualify for next season’s Champions League.
With City capturing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, Pep Guardiola’s side will no longer pursue Kane.
But that doesn’t automatically mean he will spend the rest of his career in north London.
According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Spurs have received contact from Bayern Munich about Kane’s availability.
The Bundesliga winners are searching for a new goalscorer as Robert Lewandowski wants out. He is gunning for a move to Barcelona this summer.
Bayern plot Harry Kane, Mane moves
Bayern want Sadio Mane and have made two bids for the Liverpool forward. But they are comically low, forcing the Reds to reject them out of hand.
Many have been expecting Bayern to sign Mane as Lewandowski’s replacement. The Senegal international usually operates on the left flank but has shown in recent months he is able to play as a centre-forward.
But Pedulla claims Bayern want to land Kane in addition to Mane. Due to this, they have contacted Spurs to see if the 28-year-old is available for transfer.
Spurs’ response is to be expected – they have no desire to let their academy product leave, whether it be this summer or any future transfer window.
Kane is invaluable to the team due to his goals, assists and all-round presence. Plus, he could become Spurs captain when Hugo Lloris retires.
Therefore, it will take a monumental bid, probably in excess of £150million, for Bayern to complete a deal. As such, their enquiry will probably amount to nothing.
Pedulla also states Spurs have recently offered Kane a new deal. It is unclear if this came before or after Bayern’s enquiry.
Kane’s current terms expire in 2024, and the north London outfit want to finalise his future beyond then.
Spurs chiefs are confident Kane will sign a new contract as he appears to be happy there. Plus, Antonio Conte is helping to make them far more competitive than before.
Spurs will need to increase Kane’s wages to get him to sign. But as he is one of their priorities, Levy will undoubtedly sanction a pay rise.
Bayern’s interest in Kane is very ambitious and we doubt he will be leaving the Premier League anytime soon.
And if Conte remains as Spurs coach, then there is a decent chance Kane could finally win a trophy in the next few years.
