Tottenham produced a vintage Jose Mourinho performance as they beat Manchester City 2-0 to go top of the Premier League.

Counter-attacking goals in each half from Son Heung-min and substitute Giovani Lo Celso handed Spurs a statement victory despite Pep Guardiola's men dominating possession in the capital.

The City boss signed a contract extension this week, but was not able to toast it with three points after his team failed to breakdown the disciplined and organised hosts.

It meant Mourinho, who celebrated a year in charge of Tottenham on Friday, again got one over his old rival to send the north Londoners back to the top of the table for at least 24 hours.

Dan Kilpatrick was in north London to run the rule over Mourinho’s players…

Tottenham player ratings

Hugo Lloris 8

Stayed alert to make a crucial late save to deny Dias and commanded his area superbly, often coming for crosses to relieve the pressure on his defence.

Serge Aurier 8

Often a liability in big games but played his part in a magnificent rearguard, making a number of vital interventions and blocks.

Toby Alderweireld 9

Personified Tottenham’s resolve and commitment, and rolled back the years in a magnificent display. Hobbled off 10 minutes from time in what could be a major blow for Spurs.

Eric Dier 8

A true body-on-the-line defensive performance and also impressive with the ball, often switching the play nicely.

Sergio Reguilon 8

Tireless. Coped really well with the threat of Mahrez, who tried his best to isolate the Spaniard. Also got forward impressively.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 8

Battling performance without the ball and economical with it. Misplaced just two of his 32 attempted passes. Great signing.

Moussa Sissoko 8

The perfect man for this type of display. Unglamorous but worked hard and did his job.

Tanguy Ndombele 8

Led Tottenham’s press from the front and ran himself into the ground. With the ball he was decisive, setting up Son’s goal with a perfect pass.

Steven Bergwijn 8

Justified his surprise selection with tireless running on the counter-attack.

Heung-min Son 8

Scored a trademark goal with a darting run in behind to make the difference again. Unselfishly squared to an offside Kane in the first half when he probably should have shot.

Harry Kane 9

Magnificent. Set up Lo Celso’s goal with another assist and was influential in Son’s by dragging two defenders out of position.

Star Man: Toby Alderweireld

A rock at the back who personified Spurs' warrior-like approach. Hobbled off ten minutes from the end clutching his groin in a worrisome development.

Substitutes

Giovani Lo Celso (Ndombele 65') 8

Incredible impact by scoring after 36 seconds with his second touch.

Lucas Moura (Bergwijn 73') 7

Stretched City on the counter-attack with fresh legs after replacing Bergwijn.

Joe Rodon (Alderweireld 80') 7

Came through a big test after replacing the injured Alderweireld.

Subs not used: Bale, Hart, Rodon, Lo Celso, Lucas Moura, Davies, Vinicius
