Tottenham player ratings vs Manchester United: Lack of confidence evident in error-strewn displays

Tottenham went down 3-1 to Manchester United to leave their top-four hopes and Jose Mourinho’s job hanging by a thread.

In predictable fashion, Spurs squandered a lead to comeback kings United, who increased the pressure on leaders Man City with second-half goals from Fred, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood.

In a first-half mired with controversy, Spurs took the lead when Heung-min Son scored minutes after a Cavani goal was disallowed by the VAR for a Scott McTominay foul on the South Korean in the build-up.

Hugo Lloris 5

Beaten too easily at the near post for Greenwood’s goal. Hard to blame him for the other two and made a smart one-handed save to deny Bruno Fernandes.

Serge Aurier 4

Failed to pick up Cavani for the second goal in a shaky defensive display. Offered little going forward.

Eric Dier 5

Looked unsteady on his first League appearance since February. Made an important block to deny Paul Pogba.

Joe Rodon 6

Played his part in unsure error-strewn Spurs defensive display but once again felt like the best of a bad bunch.

Sergio Reguilon 5

Hesitated to get forward, which is his real strength, and loose with the ball. Fatally nutmegged in the build-up to United’s winner.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 5

Kept the ball moving and industrious but never hurt United in possession.

Tanguy Ndombele 6

Worked hard and played a big part in Son’s goal with a crisp pass into Kane. Tired too early and had to be replaced, though.

Giovani Lo Celso 5

Tenacious and a nuisance without the ball and involved in the build-up to Son’s goal. But loose in possession and still looks short of match-sharpness.

Lucas Moura 6

Continues to justify his selection ahead of Gareth Bale and Dele Alli, setting up Son’s goal, and battled hard. Often loose with the ball when it mattered though.

Heung-min Son 6

Equalled his best goal tally in a Premier League season with number 14, a cool back-post finish, but was otherwise poor. Hesitated time and again in the final third and looks a shadow of his best self.

Harry Kane 7

Hard to fault his effort, as usual, and provided moments of quality, including a sublime touch to create Spurs’s goal.

Substitutes

• Moussa Sissoko (Lo Celso 61’) 5: Offered little, barring a comically mistimed shot, after his introduction.

• Erik Lamela (Ndombele 78’) 5: Spurs conceded seconds after his introduction and could not help turn the tide.

• Gareth Bale (Lucas 82’) 5: Ignored until it was too late and could not save Spurs.

Not used: Hart, Alderweireld, Tanganga, Winks, Dele, Vinicius.
