Tottenham slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Pacos de Ferreira to leave their Europa Conference League play-off in the balance.

An inexperienced and youthful Spurs side were beaten by Lucas Silva’s first-half strike to leave them needing to win next Thursday’s second leg in north London to reach the group stage.

Dan Kilpatrick rated the Spurs players in Portugal...

Pierluigi Gollini 6

Far from the most guilty for Pacos’ goal, but might have done better when one-on-one with Silva.

Cameron Carter-Vickers 4

A clumsy performance which did little suggest he has a future in the first-team. Caught deep and played Silva onside for the winning goal. Hobbled off with a late injury to cap a frustrating night.

Cristian Romero 5

Billed as the signing to fix Spurs’ defence, but on this evidence patience is required. Caught square for the Pacos goal and did not look wholly convincing. In his defence, he is still working his way to full fitness and does not speak the language yet.

Ben Davies 6

Captaining the side, Davies brought the ball out of defence well and was the most solid of the three centre-backs.

Matt Doherty 5

Put in one good cutback which Gil squandered, but did not do enough from wing-back to leapfrog Japhet Tanganga in the first XI.

Harry Winks 5

Failed to take his chance with an erratic performance, which included losing the ball in the build-up to Pacos’ goal.

Giovani Lo Celso 5

Failed to stamp his authority on the fixture, as you might have expected from a Copa America winner. Too loose in possession and didn’t gel with Winks.

Ryan Sessegnon 7

Initially rusty and fluffed Spurs’ best chance of the game from Gil’s early cutback. Grew into the game and was Spurs’ brightest player in the second half. Needs minutes to restore touch and confidence.

Nile John 4

Hooked at half-time after an anonymous full debut, although in fairness to the teenager he might’ve hoped for more composure and service from his senior team-mates.

Bryan Gil 6

Lively but not always effective on his full debut. Skinned his full-back in the second minute to create a chance for Sessegnon. Looked at home on the ball and saw plenty of it.

Dane Scarlett 5

Starved of service and couldn’t make the most of the half-chances that fell his way. Looked confident on the rare occasions he had the ball at his feet.

Jack Clarke (John 46’) 5

Could not make an impact on the game after coming on at the interval. Would’ve been frustrated not to start ahead of John.

J’Neil Bennett (Sessegnon 80’) 5

Gave Sessegnon a breather for the final 10 minutes, with Clarke switching to the left wing.

Maxim Paskotski (Carter-Vickers 86’) N/A

Subs not used: Astin, Lyons-Foster, Cesay, Ma. Craig, Mi. Craig, White, Mundle.
