Barcelona have instructed Memphis Depay that he must find a new club and Tottenham Hotspur have shown the most interest, according to a report.

Memphis only joined Barcelona last summer on a free transfer from Lyon. He proceeded to score 13 goals from 38 appearances in his debut season with the club. However, they are now looking to move him on.

Head coach Xavi looks set to secure his ideal front three for the new season. Barcelona have renewed the contract of Ousmane Dembele, have signed Raphinha, and have reached an agreement in principle to take Robert Lewandowski.

As a consequence, some of their existing options are at risk of leaving. Behind Xavi’s first-choice front three, there will be Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati to compete for a place.

Memphis, in contrast, could be left behind. Barcelona still respect him as a player and a person, but only have him as their seventh choice at this moment in time.

Therefore, Diario Sport are relaying that they have told him to leave – “yes or yes”.

Tottenham were recently revealed to be a suitor for the former Manchester United flop’s signature. However, doubt was cast on whether he would want to play for them or not. Now, though, Barcelona’s insistence that he leaves could make things interesting.

Sport remind that Tottenham have “put the most effort” into signing Depay up to this point. The report confirms, though, he is not overly enthusiastic about them.

Instead, he could head to Italy, either to team up with former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho at Roma or to join Juventus. Another solution for the Dutchman would be to return to his native Netherlands with Ajax.

Sport claim Barcelona have made Memphis available for €20million (£17m) this summer. However, his representatives feel this could be obstructive to him getting a good contract elsewhere.

With only one year left on his contract, there is a chance they will try to drive his price down.

Tottenham move not the most sensible for Memphis Depay

The report concludes that Memphis Depay will consent to a departure if he can be a protagonist for another Champions League club. Although Tottenham can fulfil the latter criteria, it is unlikely he would be the main man instead of Harry Kane.

Therefore, perhaps this is an idea Tottenham should put on the shelves. They have already added Richarlison to their attack this summer in a big-money move from Everton.

With Kane, Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Moura also on the books, there would not necessarily be many more guarantees at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium than there would be at Camp Nou.

Meanwhile, Roma could not offer him Champions League football. Besides, he didn’t exactly set the world alight under Mourinho at Manchester United; he failed to score from eight appearances under him.

That would leave Juventus and Ajax as his options to consider for now. The former signed Dusan Vlahovic to lead their attack in January, so perhaps his most prominent placing would be with Ajax.

But it remains to be seen if the 28-year-old would be willing to leave one of Europe’s top five leagues behind after getting his career back on track in recent years.
