Tottenham will reportedly offer Ryan Mason a role on Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff, although there is a feeling that the young coach could seek a full-time managerial role elsewhere.

The north London club are currently finalising Postecoglou’s backroom team after recently naming the Australian as Antonio Conte’s permanent successor on a four-year contract.

Postecoglou tends to travel alone rather than with a coaching team, although it’s thought that he would like to bring his Celtic No.2 John Kennedy with him to the Premier League.

Celtic may have something to say about that, however, as they are keen to keep the Scot on board.

As for Mason, the 31-year-old threw his hat into the ring for the permanent Spurs job during his second spell in interim charge for the final six matches of last season. Indeed, he insisted at the time that is “ready” to take on a permanent manager role.

Mason is expected to hold talks with Daniel Levy before deciding his future. However, the Evening Standard reports that the club are keen to keep their former midfielder around and will offer him a role after discussions with Postecoglou.

Tottenham are expected to field enquiries for Mason’s services though, with at least two Championship clubs showing an interest.

Spurs keen to keep Mason on board

However, keeping the young coach on board is still considered good for continuity purposes if things go awry again.

Mason took charge of the club again after the humiliating 6-1 defeat at Newcastle under Conte’s immediate successor and former assistant Cristian Stellini, and oversaw two wins and a draw in six games.

Although results were not good enough to earn Spurs a European place, Mason did have the backing of several senior players including his good friend Harry Kane, who could be Real Madrid bound this summer.

It was Mason’s second interim spell in charge after he took over from Jose Mourinho during the 2020-21 season.

And, despite the club being keen to keep him on board, it’s rumoured that Mason’s two sample sizes of having the top job are steering him towards potentially taking up a managerial role a level down in England’s second tier.

As for Postecoglou, the Australian officially takes over on July 1 but is expected to play a part in the transfer strategy leading up to the summer window opening.

The Asian market could be a prime hunting ground for Tottenham, given how well Postecoglou did bringing top talent to Celtic from there during his time in charge in Glasgow.
