Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario underwent ankle surgery on Monday and faces a spell on the sidelines - and some football.london readers in our comments section are fretting about the situation with the squad.

Just days after the high of pummeling Pep Guardiola's Manchester City 4-0, there are worries in the short-term as Vicario was confirmed to have picked up an ankle injury. 36 year-old Fraser Forster will be the club's replacement for the immediate future, but thoughts have already turned to the January transfer window to find a solution.

The club said in a statement: "We can confirm that Guglielmo Vicario has today undergone surgery for a fracture of his right ankle. Guglielmo will be assessed by our medical staff to determine when he can return to training. We're all behind you, Vic."

The presence of Brandon Austin and Aflie Whiteman at the club will provide cover for Forster in the coming weeks - but it also means that Spurs are unlikely to be allowed permission to pick up a goalkeeper on a free transfer. Premier League rules do allow free transfers outside of the transfer window, but permission is only given in "exceptional" circumstances.

Reader Guvernator thinks that the club only have themselves to blame if results slide over December: “The goalkeeper situation should have been sorted out in the summer. I really can't believe we've gone this long with no proper reserve keeper."

Commenter Olderhippie wants immediate action: “If ever there was a reason to pick up a reliable No 2 in January, this is it.”

Vicario will be missed, says Ric4ever: “The sad irony is that it happened after one of his best games - still we have good old Fraser...”. Larondeb agrees: “VENOM! You will be missed! Come back soon!”

Suggestions for fresh goalkeepers to fill the No 2 shirt will come in over the next month, but Theczar has one early pick: “There's also the likes of Mark Travers of Bournemouth?”

Vicario's absence looks set to see Forster take on the gloves with Tottenham facing a busy schedule in the Premier League, Europa League and Carabao Cup. The veteran goalkeeper has already made three appearances for the Lilywhites this term, with two of those coming in the Europa League and one in the late Carabao Cup win over Coventry City in September.

Taking to Instagram after going under the knife, Vicario shared a picture on the hospital bed. He wrote: "Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don’t expect.

"I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately there was no way around this one. I needed surgery.

"I’m disappointed I won’t be able to help the team for a while. A massive thank you to the doctors and the staff. The operation went well, and from tomorrow I’ll be working hard to come back stronger, fitter, and ready to give my all for you again. Thank you to the Spurs fans for all the love."
