Tottenham spice up Chelsea defender race with late offer to rival Nottingham Forest
Tottenham have reportedly approached Chelsea to ask about the possibility of a loan deal for Trevoh Chalobah, after Nottingham Forest were said to be interested in taking him on board.
Throughout the transfer window, Spurs have been interested in signing a central defender. They snared Micky van de Ven early on, but after a poor season at the back last term – conceding 63 Premier League goals – it’s no surprise they want more.
Moves for Perr Schuurs, Edmond Tapsoba and Clement Lenglet have all been mooted. The north London outfit attempted to snare Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly for £20million, but were told that wasn’t enough, and have since ended that pursuit.
They’ve now moved onto rival side Chelsea’s Chalobah. Indeed, Fabrizio Romano reports they have approached the Blues to ‘ask’ for him on loan.
He adds that it’ll be difficult due to the sides being rivals, and because of the formula of the deal. However, Chelsea sold a higher profile player in Kai Havertz to another local rival in Arsenal earlier in the window, so that may not be a huge issue.
Nottingham Forest have also been heavily linked with Chalobah of late. It was reported they’d sent a £25million bid to the Blues, rivalling Bayern Munich for his signature at the time.
At that point, it was said the centre-back only wanted to join Bayern, but the German transfer window has now closed, and he didn’t make the move.
Romano stated at that point there are ‘no negotiations ongoing with Forest’ despite reports of their bid. If that is the case, Tottenham might be the only side in the mix for Chalobah up until the end of the window.
While Romano says it’ll be tough for them to get the deal over the line, being the only side actively pursuing the defender gives them the best chance of getting the deal done.
With no chance of going to Bayern, there’s a chance Chalobah decides that Tottenham is a move he wants to make. At Chelsea, there are four centre-backs ahead of him in the pecking order, and that becomes five when Wesley Fofana is back fit.
While there’d be five to contend with at Spurs, Ashley Phillips just joined as an 18-year-old and the club have been actively looking to ship Eric Dier out.
As such, he might see Spurs as the better option for him, but would still need Chelsea to accept an offer, which it seems at the moment they may not do.
