Tottenham director Fabio Paratici is biding his time as he decides on the future of Pape Matar Sarr after talks were held over his potential transfer to a Serie A side.
The Senegalese midfielder arrived at Spurs back in summer 2021, costing a fee of around £14.6m from French side Metz. At the time of his signing, Tottenham were told they had a superstar in waiting, with comparisons drawn to a young Paul Pogba.
Still only a teenager at the time, Tottenham decided it best for his development if he spent the season with the Ligue 1 side to gain more experience.
And the decision proved a wise one as Sarr was involved in 34 games in all competitions over the course of the 2021/22 season.
That form ultimately saw him become a regular in Senegal national squad, having first made his debut in March 2021. Indeed, he was part of the Senegalese squad that won the 2022 African Cup of Nations.
He has since won 12 caps for his country, featuring twice as a substitute at the World Cup.
After hooking up with Spurs officially for the first time this summer, Sarr has had to bide his time for an opportunity.
However, his debut arrived on New Year’s Day during the 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa when he appeared as an 80th-minute substitute. He also featured again a few days later, coming on after 66 minutes of the 4-0 win at Crystal Palace.
And Sarr was handed his full debut against Portsmouth in Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie.
Pape Sarr loan talks have taken place
However, competition remains tough at Tottenham. And amid claims Antonio Conte wants to strengthen his midfield, Sarr may soon find himself pushed down the order again.
Were that to happen, Tottenham may once again allow Sarr the chance to move away on loan.
And reports in Italy claim that talks have already taken place with Serie A side Salernitana. They are currently 14th in the table and locked in what appears a fight for survival this season.
However, their manager Davide Nicola has made clear his wish to sign a new midfielder this month.
Now the club’s sporting director Morgan De Sanctis has confirmed talks with Paratici over Sarr. And he admits the 20-year-old midfielder has all the characteristics his side need.
“We need players like Tottenham’s Sarr,” he was quoted as saying by Alfredo Pedulla. “He has the characteristics we want in that position on the pitch.
“The injuries to Maggiore, Sepe and Mazzocchi have changed our goals in the transfer market.”
Whether a deal can be sanctioned for Sarr will depend on what Spurs do themselves in the winter window.
However, another Italian source, Gianluca Di Marzio, claims Salernitana are ‘prepared to wait’ for Sarr during January. He remains their top transfer ‘goal’ this month. That said, there is an understanding from the Serie A side that any deal will be ‘difficult’.
The report adds Tottenham will have the final say on any move with the decision left late in the window.
