Former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure is set to be handed a full-time role at Tottenham as an academy coach. The 39-year-old has spent the last seven months working with Spurs as he progresses through his coaching licenses. Now, after impressing in north London, Toure is set to be handed a permanent role with the club as he pursues his UEFA A License. Toure's only previous coaching experience came in assistant manager roles at Ukrainian club Olimpik Donetsk and Russian side Akhmat Grozny.

The Ivorian has also spent time at QPR, Blackburn and the Welsh FA since his playing career ended at Chinese club Qingdao Huanghai in 2020. Speaking of his coaching ambitions, Toure said "Sitting in an office the whole time - that's not me. "I want to be out on the grass, interacting with other people, exchanging ideas." Toure will be joined in Tottenham's academy by the club's former striker Jermain Defoe.

Having scored 143 goals in 362 games for Spurs across three separate stints, Defoe has etched his name in the Tottenham history books, and he's now back in north London to pursue his own coaching career. Defoe's previous coaching experience came at Rangers, where he held a player-coach role under Steven Gerrard. Both Toure and Defoe are expected to be handed their own age group in Tottenham's academy, as the club continue to shake-up their setup.
