A perfect addition for Tottenham has confirmed the club did make contact last summer, and whether a deal could be reignited in January has been detailed.
Spurs bought well in pre-season, though one position they addressed left a sense of wanting more. Left centre-back was an area the club changed up and moves for the likes of Pau Torres and Alessandro Bastoni were explored.
However, neither avenue bore fruit and Tottenham ultimately signed Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona.
The Frenchman has done his part this season, though is only viewed as a short-term fix. Indeed, Fabrizio Romano recently confirmed Tottenham are sizing up a more high profile addition in the position.
“They’re (Tottenham) looking for a centre-back because, in that position, they probably need a new player in January,” said Romano.
Spurs admire RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol who is thriving for Croatia at the World Cup. However, if the 20-year-old does move to London, Chelsea look the odds-on favourites.
A move for someone like Bastoni may wind up representing the smarter choice anyway. Indeed, the 23-year-old is fully accustomed with the demands of Antonio Conte having played under him at Inter. He also plays in a back three week in week out at the San Siro.
Bastoni’s current deal expires in 2024, though he’s not the most pressing concern at Inter. Fellow centre-halves Stefan de Vrij and Milan Skriniar are both out of contract 12 months earlier in 2023.
Now, in an interview with Corriere dello Sport, Bastoni spoke at length on a range of topics, including Tottenham and Conte.
Firstly, Bastoni did confirm Spurs made contact last summer, though the rest of his response suggested any future move will be difficult.
“There was some contact,” said Bastoni. “But I’m happy I stayed at Inter.”
Furthermore, Romano recently claimed that despite Inter seeking to balance their books with a winter window sale, Bastoni isn’t a player they’re likely to sacrifice.
“I have seen a lot of links with Alessandro Bastoni,” said the transfer guru. “But I’m told that Inter are not open to letting him go in January.”
All Bastoni hope lost?
A deal looks difficult to say the least, though the player did speak highly of Conte when assessing the managers he’s played for.
As such, if any manager can prise Bastoni away from Inter in a future window, perhaps it’s Conte.
When comparing Conte, current Inter boss Simone Inzaghi and Italy’s Roberto Mancini, Bastoni said: “With Conte, you entered the field knowing perfectly what you had to do, because everything had been studied maniacally.
“The other two are very similar in how they prepare for matches, their attitude on the pitch and how they approach the players, in the sense that they are very calm and open to dialogue.
“I can add that, in terms of play, Inzaghi has given me a lot, because the propensity to push arm in arm was born with him.”
