Tottenham tipped to banish mediocre asset who no longer has a place in their plans
Pete O’Rourke feels Tottenham “might be open” to letting Emerson Royal leave in the summer “for the right fee,” with his place now filled by Pedro Porro.
Royal’s Tottenham career, as with the fortunes of the side of late, has been up and down. He was given the starting spot on the right-hand side of the defence last season, following his move from Barcelona.
His impact was not huge, but he was part of a side that managed a fourth-placed finish.
Mid-season this term, he had a period of very good form. Indeed, the Brazilian scored against Manchester City in January and again against West Ham United the following month, keeping up his good run between those appearances.
However, that run coincided with the signing of Porro, from Sporting Lisbon. The Spaniard, having been signed for north of £40million when the deal is activated, was always going to make his way into the side.
Despite a baptism of fire on debut in a 4-1 loss against Leicester City, Porro has improved, making the spot his own. The former Sporting man has scored two goals and assisted once in 10 games for Spurs – the same tally as Emerson this season in 12 fewer games.
That Porro’s spot has been unchallenged of late is helped by the fact the Brazilian has been out with an injury for the last few games.
However, given Porro now appears to be getting to grips with the Premier League, the spot might be his for good.
Spurs tipped to let Emerson go
Emerson has been the subject of talk of a move away from Spurs of late – his father, who is also his agent, feels there is a “great possibility” of him leaving, as he “fits a giant like Real Madrid”.
The chances of him heading out of the exit door at Spurs have been reinforced by journalist O’Rourke, who also tempered expectation over a huge move.
“The agent’s saying that he thinks he could go to a bigger club than Tottenham, but he would definitely need to become more consistent and improve his performances for that to happen,” he told GIVEMESPORT.
“But with Porro in there now, I think Spurs might be open to letting Emerson Royal leave in the summer for the right fee.”
Selling Emerson could be good business
Emerson might well fetch a good fee if Spurs are to sell him this summer. He joined from Barcelona for a fee in the region of £25million.
That he’s played consistent football since then will help Spurs to attract suitors. What’s more, he’s still got another three years left on his deal.
As such, his valuation shouldn’t have dropped much, if at all.
If there is interest from a giant, as his agent feels there should be, Spurs could receive a good sum. They could potentially ask for more than they signed the right-back for two years ago.
Given Porro is making the position his own, selling Emerson seems a decent idea, as they’ve not really missed him since he’s been out anyway.
