Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has urged Tottenham to cash in on left-back Sergio Reguilon this summer in order to free up some transfer funds for Antonio Conte.

The Spain international arrived at Spurs in the summer of 2020. However, he has had mixed fortunes in north London, during which time he has played three different permanent managers.

Things started well under Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo, but Reguilon has struggled to convince Antonio Conte that he is the first-choice option for the left-wing-back role.

Indeed, the Italian has often preferred the right-footed Matt Doherty to play in that position.

Recent rumours suggest that Reguilon could be moved on in the summer, with Real Madrid having a buy-back option on the 25-year-old.

Another unnamed Spanish club, thought to be Atletico Madrid, are also keen on the defender.

Real’s current buy-back option comes in at around £28million. And Phillips believes that sort of money will allow Conte to reinvest in his Tottenham squad.

Return to Spain makes sense

Speaking about a potential exit for the player, he told Football Insider: “From the outside looking in, that seems to make a lot of sense. He’s not really been first-choice since Conte has come in, so I think it’s fair to say he isn’t in the manager’s plans going forward.

“If he can free that salary up by selling him on – then Tottenham can go out and have some money to play with in the transfer market.

“We all know they need to make a few signings, so that makes sense from a business point of view.

“From the player’s perspective as well, he could have his eye on a move back to Spain. That is a move which really makes sense from all angles, really.”

Reguilon has clocked up 31 appearances in all competitions for Spurs this season, scoring two goals and adding three assists.
