Tottenham have been told that they are “crying out for” Croatia centre-back Josko Gvardiol and they should sign him “no matter what the cost”.

Tottenham are one of a few sides who have been frequently linked with Gvardiol of late. They are among a group which also includes London rivals Chelsea.

Links to a few sides began ahead of the World Cup. However, the centre-back’s performances at the tournament cemented him in the plans of some big teams.

Gvardiol was one of the standout players of the tournament. It showed a lot maturity for him to perform so well on such a big stage at just 20 years of age.

He played every single minute of Croatia’s campaign, including back-to-back extra-time matches – firstly against Japan, and then in a massive game against Brazil.

That Croatia only conceded one goal in the group stage showed how effective Gvardiol and the rest of the defence was. His role was clearly one of the more impactful, though, as he was named in Sky Sports‘ team of the tournament.

It has been little surprise that links to a number of clubs have ramped up since the tournament ended.

Tottenham are one of the leaders of the chasing pack, after Bayern Munich shelved their interest.

Spurs have the means to land Gvardiol

According to former footballer Noel Whelan, Spurs have what it takes to attract players of Gvardiol’s quality to the club.

“Spurs have got the training ground, the stadium, the fanbase, the facilities,” he told Football Insider.

“They’ve also got a world-class, fantastic manager. That is everything you need to tempt someone like Gvardiol to the club.

“They’re sitting in a very healthy place in the Premier League, as well.”

Indeed, a lot of the attractive assets that they have have only come over the last few seasons. As such, they could be the catalyst for the club finally winning a trophy – the last time was in 2008.

They also have a squad containing some high-calibre footballers. With that being said, they could tempt Gvardiol to the club, over the likes of Chelsea.

Gvardiol signing needed at any cost

Whelan also thinks the addition of Gvardiol is necessary to take the next step. He detailed the poor result at Brentford, when Clement Lenglet and Japhet Tanganga both started at the back.

“Tottenham are crying out for a solid player to go next to Romero. He was a standout during the World Cup,” he said.

“They’ve conceded two cheap, terrible goals against Brentford, they’ve conceded first in their last six games.”

Indeed, Romero walks into the side when fit, but the players around him might not be up to standard. It is hard to ignore a 2-2 draw to Brentford, followed by a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa – both clubs below eighth in the table.

Whelan feels Spurs should be giving whatever RB Leipzig ask for in order to take Gvardiol off their hands.

“If I’m Conte, I’m steaming in and signing this player no matter what the cost. It could be the difference between getting Champions League football or not.”
