Tottenham are mulling a raid on Newcastle to sign Allan Saint-Maximin with talk over a double exit in the forwards ramping up, per reports.

The Magpies talisman, 25, is near-unplayable on his day. His goals and assists returns remain conspicuously modest, though the Frenchman previously indicated those tallies will soar when playing alongside better players.

Saint-Maximin concluded the last campaign with five goals and five assists in the league. While those figures are a far cry from the likes of those provided by Son Heung-min, his direct dribbling and quick feet ensure defenders are never given an easy ride.

The Daily Mail recently claimed Tottenham were sizing up a transfer approach this summer. The round figure of £50m was deemed required to bring Newcastle to the table.

Football London have now doubled down on those claims, and recent reports over a double Spurs exit go some way to explaining their interest.

The outlet state Spurs chief Fabio Paratici is ‘weighing up a move’ for Saint-Maximin. The Italian is labelled a ‘big admirer’ of the skilful forward.

Spurs can already call upon Harry Kane, Son and Dejan Kulusevski in a star-studded front three. Lucas Moura is also on the books, while Ivan Perisic has arrived from Inter Milan.

Yet Perisic is expected to slot in at left wing-back and recent reports have tipped Bryan Gil and Steven Bergwijn to depart this summer.

Latest on Gil, Bergwijn exits

Gil is a target for both Valencia and Real Sociedad. The latter are able to satisfy a particular demand Spurs have regarding Gil.

Bergwijn, meanwhile, has been the subject of a bid from Ajax. The latest on his future can be found here.

If one or both depart, Conte will be in need of new arrivals to ensure he does not lack for depth. That rings especially true with a Champions League campaign on the horizon.

While it’s not stated in the piece, it stands to reason Newcastle won’t make a Saint-Maximin transfer easy for Tottenham.

Would Saint-Maximin fit Tottenham?

The winger can operate centrally as well as out wide having deputised as a false nine under Eddie Howe last season.

That versatility could come in handy for Conte, though spending around £50m on a player who wouldn’t make their starting eleven may not be the best use of their transfer kitty.

Other areas in Conte’s squad require attention this summer, most notably right wing-back and centre-half.

Djed Spence remains on Spurs’ radar for the former role, while Alessandro Bastoni is a top target at centre-back.

Prioritising moves for that pair over Saint-Maximin makes the most sense in our eyes.
