A pundit thinks a Tottenham midfielder will be ‘fuming’ if the club goes ahead with their reported interest in Juventus man Weston McKennie.

Tottenham have been admirers of McKennie for some time now. They were tipped to launch a bid for him in the summer transfer window, but nothing came of the links.

Tottenham are now looking ahead towards a January move for the central midfielder. They will need to bid between £21.5million and £26m to complete his transfer.

Unfortunately for Spurs, they are facing competition from Germany for McKennie. According to recent reports in Italy, Borussia Dortmund want to land the USA international too.

And McKennie could be excited about the prospect of moving to Dortmund. It would see him go back to the German Bundesliga, where he played for Schalke between 2016 and 2020.

Plus, McKennie could play alongside a compatriot at BVB. Attacking midfielder Giovanni Reyna is in their squad and has made 16 appearances so far this campaign.

Former striker Kevin Campbell has been discussing Spurs’ prospective swoop for McKennie. He thinks it would represent ‘signing players for the sake of it’.

Campbell also sent a warning about current star Yves Bissouma being ‘fuming’ if McKennie arrived as his replacement.

Pundit tells Tottenham to avoid Juve man

“There’s [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg, [Rodrigo] Bentancur, Bissouma – they are already at the club,” Campbell said during an interview with Football Insider.

“It’s just signing players for the sake of it. These players aren’t stupid, they want to play every game.

“You can accumulate all the players you want, but it’s only going to cause problems in the dressing room.

“If McKennie joins Spurs, he’ll want guarantees that he is going to play. You can imagine how Bissouma will react to that – he’ll be fuming. It’ll just cause unrest in that dressing room.”

Spurs don’t really need to add to their midfield ranks. In addition to those first-choice players, Antonio Conte can also rely on Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr.

Those two might not be up to scratch just yet, but they have time to develop as they are both under the age of 23. Plus, they don’t have to play many huge matches due to the likes of Hojbjerg, Bentancur and Bissouma usually starting.

Some would argue Spurs need an extra midfielder in their squad to challenge the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City. After all, City possess amazing squad depth and this has helped them to win plenty of trophies under Pep Guardiola.

But the fact Conte already has three top midfielders in Hojbjerg, Bentancur and Bissouma means McKennie would barely feature. Due to this, Spurs shouldn’t waste their money by raiding Juve for the American.

Instead, they should prioritise other positions which need strengthening, or sorting out for the future. One example is the goalkeeper position.

Hugo Lloris is now 35, while backup option Fraser Forster is 34. As such, Spurs might not have too long before both of these shot-stoppers retire.

They have been linked with Leeds and France U21 star Illan Meslier. But Leeds will hold out for a massive sum when selling him, so Spurs should put the McKennie money towards a bid for the keeper.

Meanwhile, Spurs need to act fast to sign an Inter Milan player after Aston Villa and Leicester made contact with his agent.
