Tottenham have been told the time has come to pull the curtain down on one of the most iconic stars of their modern era this summer and replace him with a Premier League star shining bright across the other side of London with Brentford.

Spurs are currently sat fourth in the table and look well placed to secure another place in the Champions League. That will represent a huge achievement for the club given their inconsistencies this season and amid huge doubts over Antonio Conte’s future.

Indeed, the north London side – with Conte currently on the sidelines recovering from gallbladder surgery – have won three of their last four Premier League games to surge past Newcastle in the table.

That has included morale-boosting wins over Manchester City and Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Their recent improvement has also coincided with the absence of Hugo Lloris from the side.

The France keeper has proved one of Tottenham’s most-successful ever imports of the Premier League era. Arriving in a bargain £14m deal from Lyon in summer 2012, Lloris has now made 443 appearances for the club.

And having captained the club since summer 2015, his status as a club great will never be tarnished.

However, this season there have been some worrying signs that Lloris is past his expiry date. Indeed, the veteran French keeper has made four errors leading to goals this season – more than any other player in the Premier League.

To that end, Spurs are reportedly in the process of searching for his replacement this summer.

As a result, they are reportedly tracking a number of big-name options. And some of those more exciting names are Sevilla’s Yassine Bounou and Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid.

Tottenham urged to sign David Raya to replace Hugo Lloris

However, reports indicate Spurs are also willing to look closer to home with a number of Premier League options also on their watch list. They include Brighton’s Robert Sanchez and Illan Meslier of Leeds.

Ultimately, though, the most obtainable target could come from across London in the form of David Raya.

The Spaniard falls out of contract at Brentford in summer 2024 and has rejected two offers to extend his stay.

And in confirming he wants to play at a higher level, Raya has seemingly opened the door for a summer move away.

Now former Tottenham star Jamie O’Hara is urging the club to make a firm approach for Raya. And speaking to Grosvenor Sport, he sees the two-times capped Spain international as the man best placed to usurp the veteran Frenchman.

“Hugo Lloris has been an unbelievable servant to the football club, he deserves everyone’s respect for what he’s done,” O’Hara said. “But there does come a point where you do need to invest in someone new and we’ll see who that is.

“Fraser Forster has come in, he was just a backup for Lloris and I think he always knew that. But I do think Spurs need to look at someone to replace Lloris properly and there are plenty of good goalkeepers out there. It needs to be someone with good distribution.”

Turning his thoughts to Raya, he added: “I think they should go for Brentford keeper David Raya or Illan Meslier from Leeds this summer as Hugo Lloris’ long-term replacement.

“David Raya has been brilliant at Brentford, and I don’t think Brentford will be able to keep hold of him.”

Meslier another option for Tottenham

Highlighing Raya’s qualities, O’Hara continued: “Tottenham want to play out from the back. Everyone wants to play out from the back. I think Hugo Lloris in the past has been let down by his distribution. So, Raya from Brentford, I’d take him tomorrow for that reason. I think he’s brilliant.”

Turning attention back towards Meslier, he added: “And the Leeds keeper Meslier, he has something about him. He’s good with his feet too. If Leeds go down, I think Meslier could be another one for Tottenham to target.”

Losing Raya would be a huge loss for Brentford, though Thomas Frank accepts a parting of ways is likely.

He reckons, however, that the Bees will still try and command a hefty fee for the 27-year-old.

And in Frank’s claim that Raya is “worth at least £40m” though with the caveat that “if he had three years (left) on his contract, he would be £70m”.

Nonetheless, Brentford’s record sale is the £28m received from Aston Villa for Ollie Watkins in summer 2020. Raya may well set a new record mark for the south-west London club this summer.
