Tottenham have been told why they need to persevere with Richarlison, despite significant reported interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid in a summer deal.

The Brazil international has yet to score a Premier League goal for Spurs since his £60million summer switch from Everton, although he has notched twice in the Champions League – both goals coming in the home win over Marseille.

However, Richarlison has not been helped by a lack of game time, along with injury in his time in north London so far.

The 25-year-old has only started six of his 16 Premier League outings for Tottenham so far. And his overall goalscoring record does not make for great reading, notching once in every four games during spells at Watford, Everton and now Spurs.

But despite those stats, Real Madrid are said to be viewing Richarlison as an “essential” piece of business this summer, as reported by ESPN.

And while former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor is shocked at those links to Real, he thinks Tottenham should stick with Richarlison for now.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider: “I would hold on to him if I was Spurs. He could come good for them.

“But he needs game time. You can’t be bringing him on for 20 minutes every week and expect him to score goals.

“He’s not scored in the Premier League this season because he hasn’t had the time.

“I’ve been there. When you’re brought on as a sub, you’re not warm enough, you’re not used to the pace of the game.”

Conte urged to give Richarlison extended run

Agbonlahor believes Richarlison could show Tottenham fans why the club splashed out so much for his services, if he’s given an extended run in the side.

The former Villa star added: “Conte needs to give him time and give him a run of games so he can go out and prove himself.

“If they sold him now, they’d be losing money.”

Richarlison was actually given a rare start in Sunday’s win over West Ham but was eventually replaced by Son Heung-min.

The victory moved Antonio Conte’s men back into the top four, with another London derby to come against Chelsea on Sunday.
