Tottenham vs Arsenal - LIVE!

Tottenham’s thrilling draw at home to Arsenal kicked off a showpiece weekend in the Women’s Super League.

Vivianne Miedema rescued a point for the away side, who drop their first points of the season, but that does not tell the whole story.

Indeed, while Arsenal dominated the first-half, Spurs’ resolute defence meant their chances were of reasonably low quality, albeit only the woodwork denied Beth Mead from a stunning free-kick and Katie McCabe later in the first-half.

When Rachel Williams opened the scoring just after the hour mark, it felt like Arsenal were never going to find a way.

Tottenham, who have come on leaps and bounds this season, gradually grew into the game and would surely have doubled their lead had Ashleigh Neville been able to sort her feet out in time to deflect a rebound into an open goal with around twenty minutes to go.

A brilliant start to the weekend in front of a record crowd at The Hive, attentions now turn to Chelsea’s trip to Manchester City tomorrow.

Five minutes added on.

Arsenal still pushing

15:20 , Jonathan Gorrie

84:00 - While the final touch hasn’t always been there, it’s impossible to deny the character of this Arsenal team.

Keeping the ball well, they’ve only been kept out by the woodwork and some excellent goalkeeping. Even if they lose, they’re still one of the WSL’s leading teams.

Ref drama

15:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

81:00 - Arsenal are FUMING with the referee.

Play is stopped just as Arsenal are in and McCabe squares to Nobbs, who then has a free shot on goal.

While Korpela might have saved had the whistle not gone, it’s strange to have seen played stopped with Arsenal in a good position after a foul on one of their players.

Tottenham making a statement

15:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

75:00 What a mature performance this is.

Granted, Arsenal could have scored but Tottenham could well have had doubled their lead through Neville. Are we looking at title contenders?

CHANCE FOR TOTTENHAM

15:03 , Jonathan Gorrie

70:00 - Arsenal have been let off.

Neville cannot sort her feet out in time to tap into an empty net.

What a story!

CHANCE FOR ARSENAL

14:53 , Jonathan Gorrie

61:00 - Maanum goes close with a drilled shot from just outside the box.

Much better from Arsenal in terms of actually making chances, though Tottenham are still in this too.

Yet another great Korpela save

14:50 , Jonathan Gorrie

57:00 - A combination of Neville and Korpela keep Miedema out.

End to end stuff

14:47 , Jonathan Gorrie

55:00 - Miedema goes close as Arsenal counter after Spurs were in the Arsenal penalty box.

What a spectacle.

CHANCE FOR ARSENAL!

14:45 , Jonathan Gorrie

Mead is within inches of scoring but the Spurs ‘keeper blocks out a shot from close distance.

Tempers flare

49:00 - Percival and Clemaron take McCabe down and the Arsenal forward is fuming about it.

Second-half begins at the Hive

14:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

45:00 - We’re back underway.

Beth Mead’s ridiculous free-kick

14:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

CHANCE FOR ARSENAL!

14:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

41:00 - McCabe hits the bar! Thumping shot from just inside the area.

Five first-half minutes to go

14:13 , Jonathan Gorrie

40:00 - Five minutes away from the break and, to give Tottenham their credit, they have kept Arsenal at bay in terms of clear cut chances.

Playing like a team who know exactly what their roles are.

Arsenal go again

14:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

33:00 - As has been the case for most of the first-half, Arsenal are playing very good football in and around the Spurs box.

Aside from the Mead free-kick, however, they haven’t got particularly close.

CHANCE!

13:59 , Jonathan Gorrie

25:00 - Brilliant free-kick from Beth Mead is SO close to cross the line after hitting the crossbar.

CHANCE FOR ARSENAL!

13:54 , Jonathan Gorrie

20:00 - Brilliant work from Miedema, who creates space with some brilliant close control and strikes the ball with her left foot.

Good save from Korpela.

Spurs chance!

13:50 , Jonathan Gorrie

17:00 - After a clever free-kick routine, Spurs have enjoyed a rare trip up to the Arsenal box.

Williamson clears from Neville, though promising to see Spurs higher up the pitch.

Spurs can’t get out

13:48 , Jonathan Gorrie

15:00 - It’s all Arsenal.

While they haven’t yet found a way through, Spurs have largely played the last 10 minutes in their defensive third. Suffocating thus far.

McCabe wasteful

13:43 , Jonathan Gorrie

10:00 - It’s not often you’d say Katie McCabe is wasteful but her free-kick from a good area fails to meet anybody.

Ian Wright watching on

13:42 , Jonathan Gorrie

Korpela dominant

13:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

05:00 - Great pressing from Arsenal sees a tempting cross delivered into the box but Korpela, who only recently made her return, claim the ball with ease.

Slick from the away side.

Tottenham fighting back

13:36 , Jonathan Gorrie

03:00 - While Ubogagu overhits her cross, Tottenham did work the ball into a good position to start with.

An entertaining game in the early stages.

Malik Ouzia’s deep-dive into a show piece weekend for the WSL

13:03 , Jonathan Gorrie

‘Saturday afternoon’s north London derby against Tottenham marks the start of a run of fixtures which will tell us whether the Gunners are simply riding the crest of a wave, or genuinely are the coming force, capable of taking on the mantle carried by Chelsea last season in conquering at home and challenging abroad.

Spurs and then Manchester United lie in wait in the league, two sides hoping to take advantage of Man City’s decline to challenge for the WSL’s third Champions League spot, while Barcelona come to the Emirates for the tantalising reverse in early December.’You can read the full piece here.

Your Evening Standard prediction

12:20 , Jonathan Gorrie

As promising as Tottenham have been this season, Arsenal’s class in forward areas will surely prove too much. Riding the crest of a wave at the moment, it’s hard to see anybody slowing them.

Arsenal to win 2-1.

Early team news

12:05 , Jonathan Gorrie

Goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela recently made her return to Tottenham action and will likely start on Saturday to form the last line of defence already containing the likes of Ashleigh Neville, Shelina Zadorsky, Molly Bartip, Asmita Ala and Kerys Harrop.

For Arsenal, the fact that Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema have been rested of late would suggest they’re likely to start.
