Tottenham vs Man City LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction after Haaland ends Spurs revival

Manchester City are back into the top-four thanks to a 1-0 win over Tottenham. Man City, who began the night 20 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, had dropped to fifth in the table following Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday, but have boosted their chances of Champions League qualification with a deserved win in north London.

Erling Haaland returned for Man City after a two-game absence and the prolific striker did not need long to mark his comeback in classic fashion. After missing an earlier chance, he broke the deadlock in the 12th minute as he had the simple task of tapping the ball home following great wing play from Jeremy Doku whose cross did take a deflection before finding the Norwegian.

Savinho should have made it 2-0 after being picked out by Doku but despite being unmarked in the six-yard box, he skied his effort over the bar. Meanwhile, Spurs had Guglielmo Vicario to thank as he made important saves to deny Doku and Haaland to ensure no further damage was done prior to the half-time break. The hosts did improve in the second half and their best chance fell to Heung-min Son but he was denied by a brilliant save from Ederson.

Tottenham player ratings

21:51 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Guglielmo Vicario 8

Kept Spurs in the game in the first half with smart saves from Haaland and Doku, and radiated confidence.

Pedro Porro 6

Repeatedly left isolated against Doku, who had him on toast in the first half. More effective going forward and made a big chance for Wilson Odobert with a fine cross.

Archie Gray 7

Battled valiantly against Haaland and Co. and stepped out of defence confidently. His switches of play were effective.

Kevin Danso 7

Caught upfield for the City goal but Ange Postecoglou encourages his defenders to be aggressive. Went close to an equaliser with a great header from Porro’s free-kick and tested Ederson again after the break. Produced some smart pieces of defending, too.

Son, Spence and Kulusevski are all on now!

Standard Sport's Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:51 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Here come the cavalry. Postecoglou will be hoping that Spence, Kulusevski and Son as they prepare to come on. To be fair, his side have been much better since the interval and are putting City under a sustained spell of pressure.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

20:33 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Back underway at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium!

Standard Sport's Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

HT, 0-1. City deservedly in front in a very flat atmosphere in north London. The good news for Spurs is that they are still in the game and have Son and Kulusevski on the bench.

But Postecoglou's changes haven't worked so far.

HALF-TIME

20:18 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

Man City lead at the break thanks to Erling Haaland’s goal, though they should be ahead by more than one.

Savinho has missed a sitter, whilst Vicario has saved from Jeremy Doku and Haaland.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

20:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45 min: Another free-kick for Spurs, this time on the right.

Porro’s delivery is good and Danso gets his head to the ball and produces an effort to draw a save from Ederson.

Maddison tries a short corner but gives the ball straight to Doku who sets City on the counter-attack but Nunes overhits his pass to Marmoush and the chance fizzles out.

Standard Sport's Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:12 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Spurs are finally enjoying a mini spell but there's just not a lot to aim at in the middle. Tel is a prospect, clearly, but he feels like a project who is largely being played down so Spurs can reap some future benefit.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

20:09 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

38 min: Tottenham growing into the game now, Bentancur wins their second free-kick in a matter of minutes after being brought down by Kovacic.

Maddison swings the ball in but Ederson, under pressure from Danso, punches it away.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

20:07 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

36 min: Nunes clips Odobert and concedes a foul. The Man City defender avoids a booking much to the anger of many Spurs supporters, Maddison and Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

20:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

34 min: Ambitious effort from Marmoush as he strikes his free-kick right into the wall.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

20:04 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

33 min: It’s a bit too easy for Man City to create chances, Savinho springs the offside trap but sees an effort blocked before Nunes is inches away from picking out Haaland at the back post.

The pressure is not easing up as Danso drags down Marmoush to concede a free-kick in a dangerous position.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

20:01 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

31 min: Yellow card for Bentancur after bringing down Nunes.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

20:01 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

30 min: Vicario to the rescue for Spurs as he makes a fine save from point-blank range to deny Haaland a second.

You feel Man City need to take advantage of these chances.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

19:58 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

27 min: It should be 2-0 Man City!

A well crafted move sees Doku pick out Savinho with a fine cross, but the Brazilian balloons an effort over the bar.

Huge chance that

Standard Sport's Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

19:57 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

These two teams are well-matched in the middle of the park but you feel City have the edge at both ends.

Haaland, Doku and Co. are proving a handful for Spurs' back four, while Tel is yet to make any impression on the visiting defence.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

19:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

24 min: Good covering from Udogie as he gets round to cut off a pass to Marmoush.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

19:51 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

20 min: Doku looks determined to make a point tonight. He evades a number of Tottenham challenges and digs out an effort which Vicario, at full stretch, gets down to save.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

19:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

19 min: Just not clicking for Tottenham at the moment from an attacking sense as Maddison’s overhit pass to Johnson sums them up.

Tottenham 0-1 Man City

19:48 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

17 min: Nunes is unhappy to have conceded a corner, he insists Odobert had the final touch.

Still, Maddison’s delivery is better this time but Man City defend it well.

Standard Sport's Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

19:46 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

On first glance, that looked like a vintage City move but the replays showed a big deflection on Doku's cross to take it into Haaland's path. Still, it was a slick move and the champions lead in a slightly subdued atmosphere here in north London.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Man City | Erling Haaland '12

19:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

12 min: GOALLLLLL

Erling Haaland marks his return to the Man City lineup with a goal.

Credit to Jeremy Doku as he got his final pass spot on following good work down the left. The Belgian put the ball on a plate for Haaland who simply couldn’t miss.

20 Premier League goals for Haaland now.

Tottenham 0-0 Man City

19:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

9 min: Doku does great to bounce Porro off the ball but once again his final ball is a let-down. The pass to Haaland was telegraphed and Udogie simply stepped in to clear for Spurs.

Tottenham 0-0 Man City

19:38 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

7 min: Man City patiently build down the right as Savinho plays in Nunes who cuts the ball back for Haaland whose effort is straight at Vicario.

Perhaps the striker should have done better, judging by his high standards.

Tottenham 0-0 Man City

19:36 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

5 min: Positive stuff from Odobert as he runs at Khusanov down the left and wins a corner.

James Maddison swings it in and the ball is flicked on by Tel who can’t get enough power on his improvised effort and Ederson gathers the ball.

Tottenham 0-0 Man City

19:34 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

3 min: Doku skips past a couple of Tottenham players, swaps passes with Savinho but loses possession just as he’s about to wind up an effort.

Tottenham 0-0 Man City

19:32 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

1 min: Promising attack for Spurs but nor Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson can create enough space to get a shot off at goal.

KICK-OFF!

19:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

We are underway in this Premier League clash.

Standard Sport's Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

19:28 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

I'm as surprised as anyone that Dejan Kulusevski and Heung-min Son are on the bench tonight, particularly given their histories in this fixture.

Postecoglou will presumably feel that both have played too much football over the last few months and a sustained break ahead of the Europa League last-16 first leg against Alkmaar in eight days will do them the world of good.

Here we go!

19:26 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

The players have emerged from the tunnel area.

Time for the player handshakes and then kick-off.

As is stands

19:23 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tottenham have dropped to 13th following Crystal Palace's win last night. However, victory for Spurs tonight will be enough to leapfrog their London rivals in the Premier League table

Meanwhile, Man City know a win will take them back into the top-four and they could even finish the night in third if Nottingham Forest are beaten by Arsenal.

Ange on Spurs team selection

19:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Ange Postecoglou has explained his Tottenham team selection.

James Maddison, Wilson Odobert and Pedro Porro all start as Dejan Kulusevski, Heung-min Son and Djed Spence drop to the bench.

It’s still a strong team and the Spurs boss is delighted to be able to rotate without weakening his side.

"It's something we have missed obviously, they'll benefit from it. They have played a lot of football those three in recent times.

"It allows guys like Destiny, Brennan and now Wilson to get up their match minutes after missing a fair bit of football."

Around the grounds

19:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Five more fixtures from the Premier League tonight.

The other 7.30pm kick-offs see Brentford host Everton, Nottingham Forest face Arsenal, and Manchester United take on Ipswich Town.

At 8.15pm kick-off, league leaders Liverpool host Newcastle United.

Hugo Lloris defends Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy

19:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Former Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has defended Daniel Levy, saying the embattled chairman deserves credit for growing Spurs into one of the "best clubs in the world".

Around two thousand Spurs fans joined a protest against Levy and the club's owners ENIC ahead of the recent home game against Manchester United, while there have been calls during matches for the 63-year-old to stand down.

Ange Postecoglou's side are experiencing a challenging season and are 13th in the table going into Wednesday's visit of Manchester City, having been eliminated from both domestic cups in the space of four days before the win over United.

Spurs selection headache

18:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

When Tottenham thrashed Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad back in November, neither Archie Gray nor Lucas Bergvall had ever been named in the XI for a Premier League fixture, while Djed Spence was still waiting for his first Spurs start more than two years after joining the club.

Fast-forward to Wednesday's reverse fixture in north London and all three players are now key members of Ange Postecoglou's squad, supporting the head coach's repeated claims that Spurs would benefit over the long-term from their bleak mid-winter injury crisis.

With the club's injury list finally clearing over the past fortnight, and Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel arriving on loan in late January, Postecoglou is starting to be faced with some major selection headaches for the first time in months.

Guardiola praises Spurs

18:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Despite Tottenham's lowly position in the Premier League table, they are a "fantastic" team, according to Pep Guardiola.

“They’re a fantastic team, with individual quality,” he told reporters yesterday. “The rhythm they play and intensity they do, incredible runners in the transitions but I think lately they have a few more extra passes.

“They can do it especially when James Maddison plays.

“The results dictate one thing, but the opinion of the team is the opposite."

Ange Postecoglou dismisses Tottenham's record vs Man City

17:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Ange Postecoglou has dismissed the significance of Tottenham’s previous record against Manchester City and says he would not be surprised if they won the Premier League again next season.

Spurs have proved a bogey team for Pep Guardiola’s side over the years and have already beaten the champions twice this term, including a 4-0 win at the Etihad Stadium in November.

City are set to be dethroned as champions for the first time in four years this term, with Guardiola’s struggling side 20 points behind Liverpool ahead of this week’s game in north London.

Predicted Man City XI

17:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Phil Foden was used as a false nine against Liverpool but struggled, so Pep Guardiola could be tempted to use Omar Marmoush as a striker this time if Erling Haaland does miss out again.

Ruben Dias came off the bench against Liverpool but is likely to start in north London, with January signing Abdukodir Khusanov potentially the one to make way.

Predicted Tottenham XI

17:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

With Dominic Solanke (knee) and Richarlison (calf) out, Mathys Tel is expected to lead the line again, while Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur have been Ange Postecoglou’s preferred picks in midfield in the last two games.

Timo Werner is available again and could be on the bench, though there is competition for places among the substitutes with Wilson Odobert and Mikey Moore pushing to be included again.

Standard Sport prediction

17:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

This game will provide a clearer indication over Tottenham's recent resurgence. Despite Man City's indifferent form this season, they have far too much quality to be taken lightly.

With that said, Spurs have a great record against City regardless of what form either side is in.

Expect goals with the hosts taking all three points.

Manchester City team news

17:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Manchester City are growing hopeful that Erling Haaland will be back tonight to face Tottenham.

Haaland was an unused substitute last week against Real Madrid in the Champions League and then left out of the squad completely for the defeat by Liverpool on Sunday, having failed to recover from a knee injury he picked up late on against Newcastle on February 15.

There is a quick three-day turnaround before City take on Spurs and Pep Guardiola says he will have decided on Tuesday evening if Haaland - who has been training - will be available in north London.

Tottenham have no fresh injury concerns for the visit of Manchester City.

Ange Postecoglou faces a decision at full-back, with in-form Djed Spence, Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie now competing for two places.
