Tottenham vs Vitesse LIVE!

Antonio Conte got a crash course in what he can expect as Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager after the Italian’s first game in charge ended in a 3-2 home victory over Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

Conte, who replaced Nuno Espirito Santo this week after the Portuguese was sacked 10 Premier League games into his first season, watched his side tear into a 3-0 lead after 28 minutes with Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura on target plus an own goal.

He then watched Vitesse score twice in seven minutes before halftime in a frantic tie complete with three red cards and an outbreak of crowd trouble amongst the visiting supporters.

Defender Cristian Romero saw red for Tottenham on the hour while visiting defender Danilho Doekhi and goalkeeper Markus Schubert were later sent off for the Dutch side.

In the end Spurs held on for the three points which boosted their hopes of making progress in Europe’s third-tier club competition. They are now second in Group G with seven points, three behind leaders Rennes, who beat Slovenian side Mura 1-0.

Relive the first goal of the Conte era

Antonio Conte gives his thoughts on the game to BT Sport:

He says: “Anything can happen but I think we should have won, and we did. We were 3-0 up and conceded two goals which we could have avoided.

“After the red card we were in trouble but to win while suffering is good for this team and the players. They needed to improve their confidence and to work a lot, we have to find the time to work - soon we have an international break.

“I’m happy because I found a group of players that showed me their ability tonight. They wanted to win and for that reason we won. For sure we have to improve.

“Tomorrow they have to rest and we’ll work with the players that didn’t play. We need to have a bit of patience because we need to work on many aspects - tactically and physically. But I’m not afraid of the work, only through the work can you reach important targets.”

22:14 , Marc Mayo

More from Son, on working under Antonio Conte.

He describes the Italian’s post-match dressing room talk as “nothing special”.

He adds: “Sometimes we have to suffer. That’s the reality and he didn’t have to say much. He only took two sessions, so it was hard for him and the players as well. We did well, especially for the first 30 minutes.

“I look forward to working with him, I’m always excited to play football and for some of the greatest managers - Pochettino, Mourinho, Nuno... And now Conte. I’m really looking forward to doing what I can.”

22:12 , Marc Mayo

Son Heung-min outlines the importance of the team performance following his goal and Cristian Romero’s red card.

He tells BT Sport: “The most important thing is that we got the three points.”

On scoring the first goals for Mourinho and Nuno too, he adds: “That’s not important, I’m trying to help the team. Obviously, you don’t score alone in football so I’m grateful for our effort and the result.

“[The red card] was part of football, as a team we have to suffer these situations which we did well and sometimes you get a red card and we need to take responsibility for everybody and it was a good lesson.”

Rennes beat Mura 1-0 in France so the Ligue 1 side lead Group G by three points, with Spurs now second a point ahead of Vitesse.

21:56 , Marc Mayo

Full time! Tottenham 3-2 Vitesse

21:52 , Marc Mayo

Job done for Conte’s men.

Three up after half an hour, dragged back into it, and then three red cards to cap it off. A mad game.

21:51 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: Openda wriggles into space in the Spurs box but just doesn’t shoot - and the hosts can scramble it away.

21:50 , Marc Mayo

90+3 mins: It has to be four but Lo Celso is denied by the sub Houwen. He was clean through.

21:47 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: A brief delay as a Vitesse fan invades the pitch and is apprehended. There were reports of trouble in the away end during the first-half.

Five minutes added on.

21:46 , Marc Mayo

89 mins: Unsurprisingly, Vitesse have lost their edge in sealing this comeback - and Tottenham have a bit of swagger about them.

21:43 , Marc Mayo

86 mins: The Vitesse keeper argued that decision but the ball clearly hit his elbow as Royal attempted to lift it home from 35 yards out.

Buitink is sacrificed for the sub shot-stopper. Lo Celso replaces Hojbjerg for the hosts.

Red card!

21:41 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: Schubert races off his line and handles Royal’s shot, he’s off!

21:39 , Marc Mayo

82 mins: There’s that game management that players like Kane can be so good at, with the right guidance.

The red wakes the home fans up and a chant of “come on you Spurs” drowns out the visitors. The three points are well within sight.

Red card!

21:37 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: That’s Vitesse down to ten! Doehki leaves something on Kane and gets his second yellow.

21:37 , Marc Mayo

79 mins: Tottenham win a couple of free-kicks to calm the game down, the latest from Kane earning a yellow for Bazoer.

The Vitesse fans’ anger at that makes it sound as if they are the home team, they’ve kept up the volume all half.

21:34 , Marc Mayo

77 mins: Back underway after the defender is patched up.

21:32 , Marc Mayo

74 mins: Back to a 5-3-1 for Tottenham, Sanchez in at the back and Ndombele the left-sided midfielder.

Sanchez is down after winning a header against Doehki’s studs. A bit of blood will require treatment for the Colombian.

21:30 , Marc Mayo

72 mins: If Nuno was criticised for his subs, this could be a big moment in Conte earning the fans’ trust.

Three changes see Son, Lucas and Skipp come off for Ndombele, Sanchez and Winks. The away team introduce Darfolou for Frederiksen.

21:27 , Marc Mayo

71 mins: This is a bit of a siege...

The Vitesse pressure is going nowhere.

21:26 , Marc Mayo

70 mins: Save!

Lloris again saves Tottenham! Bazoer curling a lovely effort to the keeper’s left from range - it was on target and all.

21:25 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Moura gallops down the right but his cross beats Kane to the six-yard box and is claimed by the keeper.

A triple sub is looming after Wittek is the latest visiting player to fire a shot at Lloris, although a deflection takes the sting off it.

21:23 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: It’s all Vitesse since the card. Bero is played in down the left and cuts a cross back to scrambled away.

A corner moments later lands for Dasa at the far-post but he launches the shot over.

21:21 , Marc Mayo

64 mins: Meanwhile, Buitink takes Dier down to earn a yellow card for himself.

Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Stadium

21:20 , Marc Mayo

That’s been coming for Romero, who loves to play in an ultra aggressive style but has often come close to crossing the line. This now feels like a big test of character for Conte’s players, who face 30 minutes with a man down.

21:19 , Marc Mayo

61 mins: Will Conte look to his bench after that red card? It looks like a 4-4-1 reshuffle.

Red card!

21:16 , Marc Mayo

59 mins: Romero is off! A second yellow for the Argentine, who is hurt himself.

21:14 , Marc Mayo

57 mins: A bit of a rebuttal from the hosts and Son’s deep free-kick falls to Reguilon, who launches a shot into a hasty block.

21:11 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Dier is first to the cross and wants a foul for a push, which Moura gets when he is much more blatantly sent to the ground as the ball drops.

21:10 , Marc Mayo

53 mins: Save!

Vitesse force Lloris into another diving stop, this time Openda taking aim from wide on the right. Corner ball.

21:08 , Marc Mayo

52 mins: That Spurs intensity and energy that was so evident earlier is coming only in short bursts now.

Understandably, this team is some way from producing such a high tempo for 90 minutes.

21:07 , Marc Mayo

49 mins: Openda drives an effort from 20 yards wide. The Belgian U21 international has five goals in four Dutch league games, including a late winner as part of a brace against Heerenveen last time out. He’s a threat.

21:05 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Openda tries to dink one in for Buitink but it’s just too far for the attacker.

Vitesse settling into this second-half nicely.

Second-half! Tottenham 3-2 Vitesse

21:02 , Marc Mayo

Back underway in North London! Vitesse bring their weekend matchwinner Openda on for Gboho.

20:59 , Marc Mayo

Elsewhere in Group G, Rennes are being held at home by Mura - 0-0. A good result for both the teams here.

A breathless first 45 minutes for Conte. Spurs raced 3-0 ahead, but eased off and Vitesse took advantage. Conte has probably learned what many suspected about this squad.

There's plenty of quality going forward but the defence needs work.

Half-time! Tottenham 3-2 Vitesse

20:47 , Marc Mayo

45+1 mins: What a half - for the neutral at least.

Conte’s Spurs launched into a 3-0 lead through Son, Moura and an own goal.

Rasmussen and Bero have made a game of it, though.

20:44 , Marc Mayo

44 mins: Can Tottenham push back further ahead? Royal drives in a low cross that the keeper diverts, then has a chance for a high one that evades Reguilon’s acrobatics at the far-post.

20:42 , Marc Mayo

42 mins: Huge cheers from the travelling fans in the bottom corner of Tottenham Stadium as some meaty challenges fly in.

That is where all the noise is coming from right now.

20:41 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: What’s the record for shortest managerial honeymoon ever?

GOAL! Tottenham 3-2 Vitesse | Bero

20:39 , Marc Mayo

39 mins: Oh my... Moura gives the ball away and Bero slots home.

20:38 , Marc Mayo

37 mins: Romero is the first Spurs man booked under Conte - suspect there may be a few more in the coming months.

Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Stadium

20:36 , Marc Mayo

Ben Davies was the furthest player forward for Spurs’ second goal, illustrating the difference in the tactics tonight from Nuno’s dour team.

Quite a few moments for Rasmussen, who turned into his own net before making amends with a fine header at the other end.

20:35 , Marc Mayo

33 mins: A breathless first-half...

As mentioned, Lloris made a great save to deny Tronstad’s dipping drive that led to the corner. It’s been far from straightforward in defence for the hosts.

But, in attack, the opposite. Davies really should have finished it off when played through for the third, yet his skewed effort almost landed for Kane before Rasmussen’s tackle edged it over the line.

GOAL! Tottenham 3-1 Vitesse | Rasmussen

20:32 , Marc Mayo

31 mins: A great Lloris save isn’t enough as the following corner is headed home by Rasmussen!

GOAL! Tottenham 3-0 Vitesse | Rasmussen own goal

20:29 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: Davies’ shot doesn’t go in, Kane gets involved. A big sea of limbs - and it goes in!

Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Stadium

20:28 , Marc Mayo

This is obviously a gentle opening game for Conte's Spurs but they are really starting to purr now and looking threatening with every attack. They're knocking the ball around with confidence and look like they have a man or two more than the visitors.

20:25 , Marc Mayo

24 mins: Tottenham making it look so easy...

Lucas Moura is rolled in down the middle, Vitesse’s defence non-existent, and it’s the simplest of finishes.

The visitors have threatened in attack but have no answers down the other end.

GOAL! Tottenham 2-0 Vitesse | Moura

20:22 , Marc Mayo

22 mins: Moura slots it home!

20:21 , Marc Mayo

21 mins: Post!

A cry of ‘keeper!’ leaves no one wondering who will claim the corner and Lloris immediately launches a counter.

Kane and Reguilon combine well before Son takes up the chance, lashing a shot against the near-post.

20:20 , Marc Mayo

20 mins: That was closer than Lloris would have liked...

Bero takes aim from 20 yards and his shot deflects wide, but that far wide, of the post. The goalkeeper was rooted to the turf.

Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Stadium

20:19 , Marc Mayo

Son, who scored the first goals under both Mourinho and Nuno and the first goal at this stadium, gets the Conte era up and running with a low finish.

Spurs are playing with far more verve and energy than under Nuno, although Vitesse have had their chances in an open start to the game.

20:18 , Marc Mayo

17 mins: Vitesse head over from a set-piece after the goal, which did come amid some pressure from the visitors.

Meanwhile...

GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Vitesse | Son

20:15 , Marc Mayo

16 mins: Moura and Kane have a bite at a goalmouth scramble before Son rolls it home!

20:14 , Marc Mayo

15 mins: Another attempt at a swift move through the middle falls down as Kane’s touch around the corner to Son escapes the Korean.

Interesting to note that Dier is the central of the three defenders, with Romero to his right and Davies left, both are perhaps more mobile.

Vitesse are finding a bit of joy in the channels and Wittek lashes a shot into the side netting.

20:12 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: Chance!

Tottenham lose possession in their own half and Frederiksen latches onto a loose ball, firing wide at the near-post. A bit of an escape for some sloppy play.

20:10 , Marc Mayo

10 mins: Hojbjerg and Skipp are very happy to rush forward and provide the pressure in this midfield, so long as one of them stays at home.

A couple of short delays have stunted Spurs’ momentum however, the linesman requiring attention to his radio.

20:08 , Marc Mayo

8 mins: Son and Lucas link up neatly in the centre circle and Kane is prepped for a one-on-one, until Moura’s pass is overhit and the keeper gathers.

20:06 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: Royal is troubadouring down the right flank with Son and Lucas fairly central alongside Kane.

A cross from the Brazilian almost reaches Kane but is cleared.

20:02 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: Close!

Son dances through the defence and his shot is rolling in... and cleared off the line.

Big noise from the only two-thirds full Tottenham Stadium tonight.

20:01 , Marc Mayo

1 mins: It’s not exactly a surprise, but there is a fresh intensity about Tottenham.

A move worked down the right sees a cross reach Moura, who heads off target.

How has Antonio Conte fared in his previous opening matches in charge of clubs?

Inter Milan beat Lecce 4-0 back in 2019 while Chelsea downed West Ham 2-1 as the Italian began life at the Bridge.

Conte earned a 2-0 win over the Netherlands in his first match as Italy boss.

And Parma were smashed 4-1 in his first Juventus game. Alas, he could only draw 1-1 on his opening day as Siena boss, away to Pescara in 2010.

Conte speaks

19:47 , Marc Mayo

Antonio Conte gives his take on the game to BT Sport.

He says: “I’m thrilled, delighted, for this new experience.

“It’s not easy to prepare for the game but I think we are ready and I feel good.

“[I prepared] with video analysis, helping the people training the team.

“For us, this is an important game. We need to win, because this competition is important for the club. We want to go to the next step and there is only one way, tonight: to win.

“We have to do better than before but I’ve seen great commitment, and great will to work.”

19:43 , Marc Mayo

19:38 , Marc Mayo

Plenty of early kick-offs tonight, the best of the action so far in the Europa League.

West Ham came back from a goal down to lead Genk in Belgium, yet drew 2-2. Napoli claimed a big 4-1 win at Legia Warsaw in Leicester’s group with Rangers drawing 1-1 at Brondby.

19:29 , Marc Mayo

Vitesse manager Thomas Letsch has admitted that his side’s preparation has been a bit different due to Antonio Conte’s arrival at Spurs.

Fresh from a late 2-1 win at Heerenveen on the weekend, he said: “Our preparation was a bit different than usual. Everything we had prepared for the first game no longer matters. That makes it more difficult, but on the other hand also easier.

"We've seen a lot of Inter matches and Conte's Chelsea time and expect a lot. But we don't know exactly what will happen, so we have to focus mainly on ourselves.

"He is one of the most interesting coaches in football today. He has a clear idea of how to play football. I like his style of play."

Ryan Mason will remain as first-team coach with a goalkeeping coach expected to arrive soon.

19:06 , Marc Mayo

That’s it confirmed, then.

The 3-4-3 era has begun at Tottenham! Kane, Son and Lucas will spearhead the attack with Skipp and Hojbjerg entrusted to keep the midfield running, with Reguilon and Royal on the flanks.

Dier, Romero and Davies are the central defenders and Lloris in goal.

Evening Standard prediction

18:38 , Marc Mayo

Despite what transpired the last time these two teams met, the visit of Vitesse represents the perfect opportunity for Conte to begin his Tottenham reign with a morale-boosting victory.

With the mutinous atmosphere and mood around the stadium suddenly transformed, we expect Spurs to be motivated to put on a show for their new boss and secure a comfortable win.

Tottenham to win 2-0.

Team News

18:12 , Marc Mayo

Conte has observed training over the last two days, with newly appointed first-team coach Ryan Mason leading the sessions, but the Italian has already been influential in determining team structure and approach and it will be intriguing to see his first selection.

A known disciple of a three-man defence, it remains to be seen how quickly he will want to implement his own preferred system.

Tottenham will be expected to field a much stronger team than the one that lost meekly in Arnhem last month, with Conte no doubt eager not to follow in Nuno’s footsteps with regard to creating an unsettled two-tiered squad.

Conte will only be without Ryan Sessegnon and Bryan Gil, who worked inside yesterday while the rest of the squad trained.

Predicted XI

18:05 , Marc Mayo

Tottenham predicted XI: (3-4-1-2) Lloris; Sanchez, Romero, Davies; Doherty, Lo Celso, Hojbjerg, Reguilon; Lucas; Son, Kane
