Reports have claimed that Tottenham are willing to pay the £43million release clause for Napoli defender Kim Min-Jae to secure him next summer.
It is no secret that Antonio Conte is on the hunt for another central defender. In the summer they signed Clement Lenglet from Barcelona on a season-long loan.
Conte, though, is eager to tie down a long-term option at the back and Kim could be the answer to their problems.
In the Premier League this season Spurs have conceded 21 goals and have been more vulnerable as of late.
They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous eight matches across all competitions. In the game before the international break they shipped three goals against Leeds and looked especially weak at the back.
Conte plays with a back three and a strong defensive unit is imperative to his system working. His preferred back three has consisted of Ben Davies, Cristian Romero and Eric Dier.
If they want to continue to improve then it is wise that they have targeted this position to upgrade.
Kim Min-Jae is on the radar
Kim Min-Jae has been on the Spurs watchlist for some time now and it has been reported that they are willing to pay his £43million release clause.
Italian journalist Raffaele Auriemma has claimed that Spurs are currently the most interested party in securing a deal.
“Speaking of strong players, let’s talk about Min-Jae Kim,” he told Tutto Napoli.
“I’m receiving worrying information regarding the possibility that someone could enforce the clause worth €50m because there is the possibility from the 1st to the 15th of July to buy him by paying the rescission clause.
“Diplomacy is underway to try to extend the agreement between Napoli and the player by removing the clause. We will see if Napoli will succeed.
“In the meantime, there is already one club that has made a move, we are talking about Antonio Conte’s Tottenham, who have made it known that they are ready to pay that €50m clause so that two South Koreans can play together: Kim and Son.
“This confirms how the Premier League is fertile ground for this type of footballer.”
Spurs should back Conte
While Spurs have hit an insistent patch of form of late, they still find themselves in a strong position under Conte.
This season they have averaged 1.93 points per game in the Premier League. If they were to continue on that trajectory, they would finish the season with 73 points.
Spurs have been a frustrating watch at times, but you can see what Conte is trying to achieve.
In the summer transfer window they spent over £100million on the likes of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Djed Spence.
Conte is well aware that his side cannot afford to stand still while the sides around him continue to strengthen.
If they do manage to beat Man Utd to Kim Min-Jae it would be a real statement of intent.
