There were times last season when Ange Postecoglou had some big calls to make in terms of leaving players out of his Tottenham matchday squad. That wasn't always the case, however, with multiple injuries and suspensions leaving the Lilywhites incredibly short at times.

Tottenham do have some lofty ambitions going into the 2024/25 season and ideally the Australian needs all his players available on a consistent basis if they are to ultimately achieve their goals. The Lilywhites have already added to their squad for the upcoming season after bringing highly-rated youngsters Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray to the club on long-term deals.

Timo Werner will also be part of the squad again next season after rejoining Spurs on a season-long loan deal from RB Leipzig. More still needs to be done in the transfer market, though, in order to give Postecoglou a squad that can challenge on multiple fronts from August onwards.

So what exactly could the 20-man Tottenham matchday squad look like on the opening weekend of the Premier League season when they travel to Leicester City? football.london takes a look below.

Postecoglou should have a rather simple job in choosing Tottenham's backline for the game at the King Power Stadium providing of course that everyone is fit and available. Guglielmo Vicario will start in goal, with Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie making up the back four.

Tottenham have already strengthened in midfield this summer following the signings of both Gray and Bergvall but they could really do with adding a top-class No.6 to take them to the very next level. Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who can operate as either a No.6 or No.8, has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after a standout season in which he helped the Italian side achieve Europa League glory.

An imposing figure in the middle of the park and someone who is very good on the ball and strong in terms of the defensive side of his game, the 24-year-old could flourish in the Premier League if he does go on to depart Atalanta. Staying in midfield, it is a huge season for Rodrigo Bentancur as he looks to get back to the levels he displayed prior to his ACL injury and he will be hopeful of a start at Leicester.

James Maddison will also be aiming to make a big impression at the home of his former club, especially after missing out on Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024. In attack, Postecoglou will have a choice between Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson on the right flank, with Son Heung-min very likely to get the nod on the opposite side.

Tottenham do need to sign a new striker this summer after failing to bring in a replacement for Harry Kane last August. Lille's Canada international Jonathan David is among the list of names the club have looked at in the position and he could potentially score goals for fun in Postecoglou's side after doing exactly that in Ligue 1.

On the substitutes' bench, Fraser Forster will provide cover for Vicario unless Brandon Austin nips ahead of him to become the club's No.2 this summer. Radu Dragusin will have to make do with a place on the bench for now, with Ben Davies giving Postecoglou choice at both left-back and centre-back.

New signing Gray can be an option for Spurs at right-back as well as in his natural role in the middle of the park. The possible addition of a new No.6 could mean Yves Bissouma drops down to the substitutes' bench, with Pape Matar Sarr also featuring on there if Bentancur is in the starting XI.

In attack, whoever misses out on the team out of Kulusevski and Johnson will be on the bench. Richarlison may also find himself on there if Tottenham are to splash the cash on a new striker ahead of the Monday night game at the King Power Stadium.

The bench could be completed by Desire Doue if he makes the move from Rennes to Tottenham. football.london reported last month that the French youngster is one of those on Tottenham's attacking midfield shortlist after making quite the impression in Ligue 1 with his current club.

That strong interest in the versatile player has not diminished and he would give Postecoglou plenty of choice if Spurs can lure him to N17 as he can play on either flank and also in midfield. Doue would certainly be a very exciting option to bring off the bench and a potential gamechanger.

Dream 20-man Tottenham squad vs Leicester:

Tottenham XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Ederson, Bentancur, Maddison; Kulusevski, David, Son.

Subs: Forster, Gray, Dragusin, Davies, Bissouma, Sarr, Johnson, Doue, Richarlison.
