"Our trajectory for the next few weeks is important"- Tom Davies ahead of Cheltenham Town Women’s Plate quarter-final at Stockport County
Cheltenham Town Women will be looking to reach the FA Women’s National League Plate semi-finals for just the third time in their history when they travel to Stockport County on Sunday (2pm).
They are on a high after their 2-1 Adobe Women’s FA Cup Second Round win over Moneyfields last Sunday.
Charley Wilson-Witton gave the visitors the lead, but goals from Ffion Llewellyn and Una Lue sent manager Tom Davies’ side into the Third Round for the second consecutive season.
On their performance last week, Davies said: “It’s mixed, it wasn’t our best performance, in the first half we were against the wind.
“With the inability to play over, it meant they could press higher and they were good with their press.
“Conceding that goal early, probably helped us. It gave us that reaction and momentum.”
It was treacherous conditions at Kayte Lane on Sunday, but Davies was delighted that his team got over the line, as they secured a home Third Round tie against tier four Norwich City on Sunday, December 8.
Davies continued: “Sometimes it doesn’t click and it doesn’t work, but still finding a way. The way our season has gone so far, that’s really important.
“Our trajectory for the next few weeks is important. We’ll hope to improve for the coming weeks.”
Cheltenham travel to Stockport Sports Village for the last eight of the WNL Plate, a competition they have progressed to the semi-finals of on two occasions: in 2018/19 where they lost on penalties to Crawley Wasps, (now Haywards Heath Town Women) and in 2022/23, where they lost 3-0 to Nottingham Forest.
To reach this stage, Cheltenham have beaten Boldmere St Michael’s 4-1 in September, along with a 2-1 win over fellow third tier side Wolves last month at Kayte Lane.
This weekend’s opponents, Stockport County, currently managed by Steve O’Hara, sit ninth in the WNL Division One North, with three wins, one draw and five losses from their opening nine games.
Davies was raring to go for this weekend, in what could be a history-making period for the club.
“We are really excited, the next two games see important for different reasons, playing against two different sides, playing in the league for so long you play similar teams," he said.
“So to go and look and research different players is nice. We’re looking forward to it, it’s an opportunity for us to reach the semi-finals.
“We’ll go there, give them the respect they deserve, and put in a good performance that will set us up for the final two weeks of the year."
The other ties in the quarter-finals include WNL Division One South West league leaders AFC Bournemouth taking on fellow Tier Four side Cambridge United, Norwich City taking on Southampton Academy.
The final tie, yet to be rescheduled, is WNL Division One Midlands side Loughborough Lightning taking on Manchester United Academy.
