Chelsea boss Graham Potter is targeting Harry Kane and reckons he has a chance of landing the Tottenham talisman, the latest England squad could contain two newbies from Liverpool and Brentford, while Thursday’s Transfer Gossip has details of three hugely-important deals nearing at Arsenal.
HARRY KANE TOPS GRAHAM POTTER, CHELSEA WISH LIST
Tottenham striker Harry Kane is Graham Potter’s dream signing for Chelsea in 2023, according to a report.
Potter finally made his ‘debut’ as Blues manager on Wednesday night as Chelsea were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by RB Salzburg.
He inherits a Chelsea squad very much lacking in confidence and still finding it’s rhythm after a raft of summer signings. Indeed, three of those were starters, while four more were unused subs on the bench.
And one of those – striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – seemingly lacks a confidence and fitness after a tumultuous few weeks.
Indeed, at 33, there are questions about just how many years Aubameyang has left at the top. Furthermore, his signing this summer was made out of a little desperation. With Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner departing, the Blues needed a new striker – and quick.
Aubameyang seemed the best ‘then-and-now’ option for Chelsea – but it seems long-term Potter is thinking big.
The England skipper has less than two years left on his deal and it remains to be seen if he will sign an extension.
Bayern Munich are being strongly linked with a move for the striker in summer 2023.
However, Potter is making plans to lure him across London to Chelsea.
Chelsea move for Harry Kane depends on sale of costly Blues flop
Any move for Kane is not only highly ambitious, it is, of course, also hugely controversial. Per the reports, Chelsea boss Potter, though, is willing to go all out to lure the England captain across the capital.
He believes his signing would make all the difference to Chelsea in the years to come. And the plan will also have the backing of ambious new owner Todd Boehly, who has spent heavily since his takeover.
The report claims Chelsea, however, will need to offload Romelu Lukaku first.
The Blues spent a club-record £97.5m to land Lukaku from Inter Milan in summer 2021. But the striker struggled on his return to the Bridge and was loaned back to Inter this summer.
Chelsea plan to offload the Belgian with the player reportedly not part of Potter’s long-term plans.
But the Blues will need to take a major hit on that investment, with Inter struggling to afford even half that £97.5m fee.
Both Potter and Boehly though want him gone with Lukaku also very much willing to make his stay at Inter a permanent one again.
IVAN TONEY, MARCUS RASHFORD
Ivan Toney will reportedly win his first England call-up ahead of the Nations League clashes with Italy and Germany.
The Brentford striker is the highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League with five goals. And only Erling Haaland (10) and Alesander Mitrovic (six) have outscored the Bees frontman so far this season.
England boss Gareth Southgate was planning to recall Marcus Rashford. And while that could still happen, an injury to the forward threatens his place.
The Three Lions boss cannot call on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is yet to appear this season. Ollie Watkins is another option, but he just one goal to his name.
Instead, The Guardian claims Toney will earn his first call and will take his place in a 26-man squad alongside fellow strikers Harry Kane and Tammy Abraham.
Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott could also earn his first call-up after impressing for the Reds.
WILLIAM SALIBA THE FIRST OF THREE CONTRACT RENEWALS AT ARSENAL
Arsenal are growing increasingly confident that three of their top young stars will soon commit to new deals.
Mikel Arteta has Arsenal flying high at the top of the table following five wins in six games so far this season. And that has been achieved around a young and mult-talented side.
Indeed, Arteta’s model means the club only buy young, talented stars who can only get better and ultimately earn Arsenal a re-sale value.
Now three of those players are in line for bumper new pay rises at Emirates Stadium.
Per 90min, Arsenal are working to tie down William Saliba, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
The trio are all on deals that are due to expire in 2024. As such, their renewals are now the No 1 focus for technical director Edu.
First up will be Saliba, who has made a big impact after finally making his debut this season. Signed in 2019 from Saint-Etienne, Saliba has enjoyed several loan moves before finally taking his chance with Arsenal.
And after being named Ligue 1 Player of the Year in 2022, he’s become a fixture in the Arsenal defence.
His renewal will likely be for five more years, while Arsenal also want to tie down Saka and Martinelli for similar new deals.
Real Madrid, Manchester City and Liverpool are among those tracking the England man. And a move to Anfield has been talked up for Saka with a major reason for quitting Arsenal discussed.
Arenal, though, remain confident of keeping the player with an agreement closing in.
