Transfer gossip: Man Utd to ‘fall back’ to six-goal striker as Man City stay ambitious
Manchester United want a new striker this summer but might be foiled for their two main targets, while Man City could miss out on theirs.
MAN UTD MIGHT FALL BACK TO ABRAHAM
The Daily Telegraph describe it as ‘a £100 million striker dilemma at Manchester United this summer as he weighs up whether to move for Tottenham’s Harry Kane or Napoli’s rising star Victor Osimhen’, but the reality is that they might get neither and might have to end up settling for Tammy Abraham, who has apparently been touted as a ‘fall-back option’. He has scored only six goals this season so it feels like a bloody long way to fall back.
‘Old Trafford sources have indicated that Osimhen better fits Ten Hag’s profile of wanting a more mobile striker who offers pace, strength and pressing, as well as goals,’ but Napoli appear to have nixed that move, with Aurelio de Laurentiis saying: “I can tell you that Osimhen is not for sale. Our players are in demand, but I don’t have to sell anyone. We don’t have any debts.”
Add that to the likelihood of Tottenham selling to Manchester United this summer even for £100m (they would much rather sell to Bayern Munich) and United could end up with Abraham.

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOILS
We stick with the Telegraph and their claim that ‘Manchester City’s hopes of making Jude Bellingham the centrepiece of a big summer revamp could be complicated by the storm engulfing the club’. They had planned to make Bellingham the long-term replacement for Kevin de Bruyne but the England midfield might be put off by the threat of points deductions and even expulsion from the Premier League.
Real Madrid and Liverpool are still the teams most strongly linked with Bellingham, though the latter’s likely lack of Champions League football will surely be a factor. But City are confident of being cleared and are still planning to spend relatively big this summer on two new midfielders and at least one full-back after the exit of Joao Cancelo.

NEWCASTLE BACK FOR MADDISON
Newcastle United will return in the summer for Leicester midfielder James Maddison after failing in a move for him in January, says the Northern Echo.
‘The Magpies failed to recruit a central midfielder last month, with the club’s inability to land any of their targets forcing Eddie Howe to admit his side is “light” in the position, and the head coach is keen to make addressing the issue a key priority for the summer.’
But Manchester City are said to be interested in Maddison as Bernardo Silva is finally likely to leave this summer after trying to get away for years.
