Manchester United have been named as one of the admirers of Ivan Toney, for whom Brentford are expecting offers, while West Ham are back in the market for a midfielder and Nottingham Forest are plotting a familiar transfer route – all in Sunday’s transfer gossip.

Man Utd mull over Ivan Toney transfer raid

Brentford are expecting bids for striker Ivan Toney this summer and one may even come from Manchester United.

Toney stepped back up to the Premier League with Brentford last season, after previously making two appearances in the 2015-16 edition with Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old was coming off the back of a 31-goal Championship season, which helped Brentford to promotion. In the top-flight, he remained reliable with 12 goals from 33 games.

Despite having a contract until 2025, his future is now a source of intrigue. It has been known for a while that he has many admirers elsewhere in the Premier League.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Toney could be targeted by his former club Newcastle, as well as West Ham, Leeds or Manchester United.

All four clubs may have a need for a goalscorer. Chris Wood hasn’t hit the heights since his January move to Newcastle, who have also missed out on prime target Hugo Ekitike.

West Ham have failed to sign a striker since selling Sebastien Haller 18 months ago. Meanwhile, Leeds struggled in the absence of Patrick Bamford at times last season.

But a move to Man Utd would certainly be the most eye-catching for Toney. It would depend, the Mirror confirm, on what happens with Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial.

Ivan Toney could be striker successor

United have already lost one striker this summer after Edinson Cavani’s contract expired. The prospect of Martial being reintegrated after his loan spell at Sevilla, though, could balance out their numbers.

If he or Ronaldo move on, though, United may be short. In that regard, the Mirror believe they could turn to Toney.

And it appears Brentford are well aware of the risk of losing Toney this summer. The report concludes they expect to have to fend off at least one bid from somewhere this summer.

If Toney was to choose Man Utd as his next destination, he would be following in the footsteps of former Brentford teammate Christian Eriksen.

What’s more, they are the only of the four suitors to be able to offer him Europa League football next season. West Ham, in contrast, could give him a taste of the Europa Conference League.

Newcastle are aiming to reach such territory in time, while for Leeds it may be another case of securing Premier League survival in the short-term, somewhat like Brentford.

Only time will tell which one of them Toney plays for next season.

West Ham raise stakes for Amadou Onana

West Ham have been working on the addition of impressive Lille midfielder Amadou Onana in recent weeks.

The Hammers have had two bids rejected and have also been reminded of rival competition from Liverpool, which may have decreased their optimism of signing him.

However, the Mail have now revealed that Lille are giving consideration to a third bid from West Ham. This time, £32.5m is on the table.

It would give the Ligue 1 outfit a huge profit after they invested £6m for Onana one year ago. But they may be reluctant to lose him so soon after a 41-appearance campaign.

West Ham’s latest proposal may be the most tempting they have received yet, though. A move to the London Stadium would see Onana compete with fellow new arrival Flynn Downes and existing options Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek in midfield.

David Moyes has been in the market for reinforcements after Mark Noble retired and Alex Kral came to the end of a forgettable loan spell. One has arrived in the shape of Downes and they will be hoping Onana can also come through the entrance.

The Mail add that West Ham also have offers on the table for two strikers: Sassuolo’s Gianluca Scamacca and Chelsea’s Armando Broja. The bids are worth £33m and £30m respectively.

Another player they are trying to sign is free agent Jesse Lingard. The attacking midfielder could choose his next club in the coming week and previously spent six memorable months in east London.

Nottingham Forest plot new Middlesbrough signing

Nottingham Forest may be missing out on a permanent deal for Djed Spence, but could sign someone else from Middlesbrough.

According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League newcomers have made a £10m offer for Boro winger Marcus Tavernier. They believe he can replace Joe Lolley, who is now surplus to requirements at the City Ground.

Leeds-born Tavernier – brother of Rangers captain James – made 48 appearances for Middlesbrough last season. Scoring five goals, he caught the attention of Forest and fellow promoted side Bournemouth.

Both have now supposedly made offers to Middlesbrough and are awaiting a response.

Tavernier’s contract with Middlesbrough has two years left to run on it. However, the 23-year-old could be about to step up to the Premier League instead.

If he joins Forest, he would be part of their spending spree ahead of their return to the top-flight. Yet Steve Cooper’s side may not stop there; the Mail add that Manchester United midfielder James Garner is on their wanted list after being on loan last season.

Wolves’ Morgan Gibbs-White and Wolfsburg’s Aster Vranckx are two other midfield targets for Forest.
