Transfer news LIVE! Ronaldo to Man Utd done! Mbappe, Haaland latest; Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool rumours today

Transfer news LIVE!

Lionel Messi to PSG looked set to be the story of the summer... but Cristiano Ronaldo is rejoining Manchester United.

Manchester City had looked favourites to sign Ronaldo from Juventus after Tottenham refused to entertain selling Harry Kane, but United have now confirmed a deal for their former No7 to return to Old Trafford.

The fun doesn’t stop there though, as another superstar - Kylian Mbappe - could also be on the move from PSG. Real Madrid have lodged a second bid, worth €170m, after the Parisians accused Real of an “illegal” approach... but if Real get their man, that could also see PSG turn to Erling Haaland. What a summer!

Chelsea are set to sell Kurt Zouma to West Ham before signing Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, while Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez could join on loan - though United are also reportedly interested. Tottenham, meanwhile, have signed Metz wonderkid Pape Sarr and are talking to Wolves about signing Adama Traore.

Arsenal have spent more than any other top European team, with the signings of Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale, and are now focussing on getting rid of deadwood with Willian heading for the exit door... but captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is staying put.

Liverpool have made a quiet transfer window and look to miss out on former targets Saul and Mbappe amid new contract plans for Mohamed Salah.

Tottenham have confirmed that Moussa Sissoko is joining Watford on a permanent deal.

Sissoko, 32, joined Tottenham from Newcastle United in 2016 and has made 202 appearances for Spurs across all competitions.

He played 44 times in the 2018-19 season, helping Tottenham reach the Champions League final.

Sissoko joins Watford on a two-year deal for around £5m, and will be available to face Spurs for the Hornets on Sunday.

What does Ronaldo deal mean for Mbappe/Haaland?

19:03 , Tom Doyle

So, what does that Cristiano Ronaldo news mean for other big transfer stories elsewhere?

Manchester United have been linked with moves for both Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe next summer, but Ronaldo’s return could well see the Red Devils pull out of those races.

Real Madrid remain the overwhelming favourites to land Mbappe - either this summer for a huge fee, or next year on a free - while PSG are reportedly sounding out Haaland about replacing Mbappe in Paris.

There could be plenty of drama left in this transfer window yet, and we’re ready for it.

Fernandes’ emotional Ronaldo post

19:00 , Tom Doyle

Bruno Fernandes has welcomed Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester United with open arms.

Fernandes has previously described Ronaldo as his “favourite player” growing up, recalling watching as a nine-year-old as Ronaldo and Portugal reached the Euro 2004 final on home soil, with a young Ronaldo’s tears following that defeat to Greece sticking in the memory.

The pair have played together at national level for Portugal, but they will now be team-mates at club level as well - and Fernandes seems delighted by the prospect of regularly featuring alongside one of his childhood heroes.

Fernandes posted a drawing of what appears to be a young version of himself wearing a Manchester United shirt with ‘Ronaldo 7’ on the back, watching a TV set on which Ronaldo takes his trademark stance for a free-kick.

A poster of Ronaldo adorns the wall, with the badges of Boavista - the club where he came through as a young player - and Portugal stuck to a dresser, along with a Boavista shirt on a chair nearby.

Fernandes’ accompanying caption reads: “Never stop dreaming. Welcome back home Cristiano” - and the midfielder has also thrown in a goat emoji to let the world know where his loyalties lie in the GOAT debate between Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo’s Juventus farewell

18:21 , Tom Doyle

Cristiano Ronaldo has bid farewell to Juventus on Instagram.

He wrote: “Today I depart from an amazing club, the biggest in Italy and surely one of the biggest in all of Europe. I gave my heart and soul for Juventus and I’ll always love the city of Turin until my final days.

“The ‘tiffosi bianconeri’ always respected me and I tried to thank that respect by fighting for them in every game, every season, every competition. In the end, we can all look back and realize that we achieved great things, not all that we wanted, but still, we wrote a pretty beautiful story together.

“I will always be one of you. You are now part of my history, as I feel that I’m part of yours. Italy, Juve, Turin, tiffosi bianconeri, you’ll always be in my heart.”

It seems as though Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is not a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo being signed by either Manchester United or Man City, warning a deal for a such a player is “not a business of the future”.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Chelsea on Saturday, Klopp said: “I watched that (the Ronaldo transfer) like a football supporter and it is not about me to judge that.

“If other clubs can do this, it is not a business of the future. It is for now and immediately.

“That is how some clubs are working and that is fine. There must be different ways, a team - two or three years later and you need success... You need to make sure you develop as a team and club, and that is what we did.”

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted Ronaldo "knows that we're here".

Asked why his reported destination was not Old Trafford, Solskjaer told his pre-match press conference: "I didn't think Cristiano was going to turn out leaving Juventus. It's been speculation this morning, speculation the last few days, of course.

"In these three or four days left until the transfer window shuts anything can happen but, in my view, there are few players - Cristiano Ronaldo included, Messi is another - they decide where they are going to play.

"Right now, my feeling is I am more than delighted with the squad we have and we will stay the same."

Ronaldo has today been linked with a sensational move to Premier League champions Manchester City, with widespread reports claiming his agent, Jorge Mendes, has met Juve officials to try engineer the transfer.

The reports claim no agreement was made, with the Turin side wanting a fee for the 36-year-old.

Ronaldo surprisingly started on the bench for Juve’s opening weekend clash with Udinese last Sunday, Italian media saying the Portuguese had asked not to be in the team to preserve his fitness for a move away from the club.

Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri denied those reports.

“Ronaldo is feeling well,” Allegri told DAZN after the match. “I had talked to him before the game, telling him he would start on the bench. He made himself available, he did well when he entered the pitch.”

Man Utd looked at Bissouma

Manchester United looked into signing Brighton’s Yves Bissouma before the transfer deadline, claim the Independent.

Declan Rice remains the dream target.

What Ronaldo has previous said about Man City

Thursday 26 August 2021 15:30 , Alex Young

Back in 2015, Cristiano Ronaldo was asked about being lured to Manchester City in the future.

"You think the money is going to change my mind at 30 years old? I don't think, I don't think this going to be a problem," he said.

"If you speak about the money I could go to Qatar, they would probably have more money than Manchester City.

“It's not about the money, it's about the passion."

Forget the money, it’s the passion.

'When you play for Man United you don’t go to Man City’

Thursday 26 August 2021 14:54 , Alex Young

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's quotes about playing for Manchester City have resurfaced amid speculation Cristiano Ronaldo is set to sign for Manchester United's bitter rivals.

Earlier this year, Sergio Aguero was linked with a move to United. Solskjaer quickly dismissed the rumours by saying: "When you play for Man United you don’t go to Man City."

"When I played for Man United, if a rival club tried to sign me, and I had gone, well where’s the loyalty?" Solskjaer said in April.

"Loyalty is one of the values I really, really put highly. I wouldn’t expect any player who has played for a club for 10 years to want to go to their local rivals.

"It’s not for me. I know we’re professionals, but when you play for Man United you don’t go to Man City. We’ve had examples of that and I didn’t really agree with it.

"I won’t name names but you all know who I mean. Enough said."

‘A surprise City didn’t go for Messi'

Thursday 26 August 2021 12:31 , Alex Young

Rivaldo is surprised Manchester City did not make a move for Lionel Messi, who is preparing to make his PSG debut this weekend.

Asked if he thought PSG was the right move for Messi, former Brazil international Rivaldo said: "Yes it is, especially in this moment of PSG.

"Great players and the enormous challenge of a Champions League for a club that has never conquered it, although I also think that a great club in England could have been an excellent decision too because of the challenge that the Premier League represents."

He added: “It is a surprise (they did not try to sign him) because of the potential that the club has, which, like PSG, brings together great stars and lives a great moment. Also because of what Messi represents for Guardiola in his career as a coach, and reciprocally as well.

“But I do not know the main reasons for this decision, although I know that having hired a great player like (Jack) Grealish moments before could have been equally decisive.”

Kounde blow for Chelsea

Thursday 26 August 2021 07:43 , Alex Young

Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Jules Kounde as Sevilla confirmed they rejected an offer for the defender.

"It is true that there was an offer for Kounde that we turned down," club president Jose Castro explained to reporters on Wednesday.

"Right now there is no concrete offer for the player. If it comes, we will look at it as we always have done. If we have to [sell], we will do, as long as those resources can be re-invested in the club to keep improving and expand our trophy cabinet.

"While the market is open, anything can happen. We have players who could leave. Anything can happen this time of year until the 31st. It is a window where there have been few moves in most clubs, but not in ours.

"Sevilla do not need to sell any player. We will sell if it suits us with an above-market bid which allows us to keep strengthening the team and achieving big things on the sporting side. That is what we have always done, we have not changed there."

The Times add that Kane’s rough salary was upped to around £300,000 a week last summer when he first asked to leave.
