Several news outlets, including the BBC, Sky Sports and the Daily Mail, report that the World Cup finalist has told his club Sporting Lisbon that he wants to leave, and that he intends to move to Louis van Gaal's side.

He has also apparently told the Portuguese giants that he will not train with the side until he is granted his wish.

Rojo, 24, was a key man in the Argentina defence that was arguably the finest at the World Cup.

While United have already spent £30 million on Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, Rojo is accustomed to playing at centre-back and would probably be the left-sided player in a back three, with Shaw playing ahead of him as a wing-back.

United have tabled a £15.9 million bid for Rojo, but are also said to be interested in Dutch defender Daley Blind, another left-footed player who can line-up either as a wing-back, a central defender or a defensive midfielder.
